About this product.

What is Kyoto 東寺 Toji?

Toji is the only remaining remains of Heiankyo. It has been about 1200 years since its foundation. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Toji is a national temple that was built along with the Heian relocation.

Emperor Saga entrusted the temple to Kobo Ambassador Kukai, who returned to Japan after learning esoteric Buddhism, a new Buddhism in Tang. The first esoteric Buddhist temple in Japan will be born here. Kobo Ambassador Kukai, who was entrusted with Toji Temple, may have tried to express the mandala in the vast temple area with Dainichi Nyorai, the esoteric Buddhist priest, in the center of the precincts.

In addition, Toji Temple, which survived the great fire that broke out in the 15th century, is an important historical heritage that conveys the ancient architecture of Japan to the present day. Stunning buildings such as the five-storied pagoda are lined up. Many tourists and locals visit the monthly fairs and antique markets in the nearby square.

Three-dimensional mandala.

Kobo Daishi Kukai used Buddhist statues to represent the mandala, which is usually drawn on a flat surface, in three dimensions in order to visualize the Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.

It is a famous three-dimensional mandala along with the five-storied pagoda.

The statues inside the Toji Auditorium are arranged with Gochi Nyorai (5 bodies) in the center, Five Bodhisattvas (5 bodies) on the right side (east side), Five Great Myo Kings on the left side (west side), and Brahma at both ends of the east and west. Taishakuten, the four heavenly kings are arranged in the four corners.

The statue of the auditorium was a secret Buddha until 1965, so the colors remain vivid until now.
