Edmond Pourchout was a 17th-century French philosopher who is
primarily remembered for his book ‘Philosophy
Institutions’. First published in 1695, this work was one of the preeminent
works on the development of natural philosophy in France. Contained within are
a wide variety of topics including logic and metaphysics, geometry, physics and
thermodynamics, ethics, and an interesting perspective on cosmology as well as
Cartesian sciences. Many of these topics are depicted in the 15 folding
engravings included in the first two volumes of the 1700 edition.
