CAPTAIN FINGERS - Sons of Champlin singer goes off in “Isn't She Lovely” as does Lee on guitar. “Space Glide” is a catchy rhythmic tune with a great sax solo and great guitar work. “Margarita” and “Fly By Night” are very melodic guitar tunes with lots of creative changes. The rhythm section is tight and the guitar playing is awesome. The sax and keyboards just make it a more tasty blend of music. All the musicians are skilled pros. Rit's House, released in 2002, is an instrumental album except for the Ritenour & McDonald version of the Police's '81 hit song "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". Ritenour and the former Doobie Brothers vocalist transform the song into an adult contemporary/quiet storm ballad.

"Creatively, Lee Ritenour has had his ups and downs over the years. Many of the guitarist's commercial pop-jazz efforts have wasted his skills as an improviser; when Ritenour is catering to NAC/smooth jazz radio, improvisation is the usually the first thing to go. But when Ritenour does have a chance to stretch out, he can be an appealing improviser. Although quite accessible, Rit's House is among his more memorable and substantial efforts. This 2002 release has a soul-jazz/post-bop outlook that often recalls the late '60s and early '70s; for the most part, it is the sort of album that guitarist Grant Green would have been comfortable recording during that era. But Ritenour's guitar playing owes a lot more to Wes Montgomery, who is obviously his primary influence on Gabor Szabo's "Mizrab," as well as original tunes like "78th & 3rd" (which features organist Joey DeFrancesco) and the dusky "Olinda." One of the album's best tracks has nothing to do with jazz: "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." Featuring former Doobie Brothers vocalist Michael McDonald, this interesting remake of the Police's 1981 hit is not only a departure from the rest of the album -- it is also a big departure from the original version. While the Police's version was up-tempo pop/rock, Ritenour and McDonald transform "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" into an adult contemporary/quiet storm ballad. That track is the album's only vocal offering; the rest of Rit's House is instrumental. Arguably, 1992's Wes Bound is still Ritenour's best studio album -- certainly from a jazz perspective. But this album is also respectable, and those who enjoyed hearing the guitarist stretching out on that mostly straightahead disc will also find a lot to enjoy about Rit's House." - Alex Henderson

From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, Lee Ritenour's forty year career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous No 1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious "Alumnus of the Year" award from USC.

Growing up in L.A. in the '60's, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour has recorded more than 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit "Is It You," which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the '90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz, with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason.

Rit is his 1981 album, recorded with a number of industry greats, including Weather Report's Alex Acuna, Bill Champlin (of '70s San Francisco Rock group The Sons Of Champlin, as well as Chicago), drummer Harvey Mason and Toto rhythm master Jeff Porcaro.

Lee Ritenour celebrates 60 years of playing guitar with a first ever "solo guitar" album, entitled Dreamcatcher!

For Lee Ritenour, there aren't many 'firsts' left to achieve. During his dazzling five-decade career, the fabled LA guitarist has taken his music to the outer limits, alighting on every genre and occupying every position in the rock 'n' roll firmament. He's been an enfant terrible of '70s fusion, a crossover star of the '80s pop chart, an honorary exponent of Brazilian jazz, and the fingers behind '90s supergroup, Fourplay. Ritenour's accolades include: 45 albums,16 Grammy nominations, Alumnus of the year at USC, Los Angeles' Jazz Society Honoree (2019), plus thousands of sessions with legends such as Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, B.B. King and Tony Bennett, among others. And yet, when he checks the rear-view mirror, the 68-year-old acknowledges he's never made a record like Dreamcatcher.

"People have been telling me for years: 'Rit, you gotta make a solo guitar record'. In the past, I've always been the band guy, the ensemble guy, the collaborative-guitar-player guy. So this was the one project I hadn't done. And this year, I knew it was time."

Weaving tapestries of instrumental guitar and conjuring eclectic moods, the 12 tracks of Dreamcatcher rank amongst the most melodic and tinglingly beautiful in Ritenour's catalogue. But there's a power and purpose here, too, hinting at the darker circumstances that sparked this new record.

"Our house and my studio in Malibu, California burnt down in 2018," he recalls. "About 100 of my guitars went up in the fire, plus 40 amps, lots of music, the history of my whole career, pretty much. A week after the fire, I went to the hospital, which I'd never had to do before, for surgery to replace an aortic valve. So those incidents and the support from my family and friends absolutely went into this music. Making this record was a life-saver for me."
