Reforming modern museums requires an understanding of the ancestry of the cultural institution of the museum and collecting, says Bounia. To that end, she examines collecting during the Classical age, specifically during the two centuries bracketing the advent of the Current Era. She takes as examples Marcus Tullius Cicero, Gaius Plinius Secondus, Marcus Valerius Martialis, and Titus Petronius Arbiter. The study began as her 1998 . dissertation for the University of Leicester, but for the published version, she has had to drop the appendices of relevant passages and translations from those writers, and embed the most important paragraphs in the text itself.
