WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI/REPLICA-LP-SLEEVE" CD?

Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.

Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.

Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.

Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded.

All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece.

On July 3rd and 4th, 1973, Carlos Santana and The Santana Band played two very incredible shows for thousands of their delighted fans in Osaka, Japan. Cleverly capturing this historic event for a soon to be released live album Lotus , the executives at Sony Music Japan, known for their masterful audiophile skills, ran tape and the rest is now classic rock history. Initially released in Japan, the monumental 3LP set Lotus would become one of the most celebrated live albums of the band’s career. With the extensive two hour performance of nonstop hits and deep album track masterpieces, Lotus was also known for its extensive tri-fold LP cover and beautifully detailed artwork elements all the way down to each personalized record label. This album would soon become one of the most expensive imported albums at the time, as collectors and Santana fans in the states would pay serious dollars to get this incredible concert extravaganza.

Featuring a cross section of Santana hits like Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Waiting, and Every Step Of The Way, plus the exotic rhythms and jams on workouts like Batuka , Mantra and the beautifully orchestrated instrumental Samba Pa Ti, Carlos Santana’s guitar was explosive as ever as witnessed by the cheers and shouts from the jubilant audience.

The legendary Carlos Santana, on guitar and vocal, is joined with original Santana band mates Michel Shrieve on his dynamic drums, Doug Rauch on his prolific bass, Jose Areas on hard hitting percussion, plus the brilliant jazz and funk superstar Leon Thomas on vocals, the celebrated Latin percussionist Armando Perez, and the stellar keyboard work of long time Santana associate Tom Coster.

Live at the Fillmore 1968 is a two-CD live album by the rock band Santana. It was recorded at the Fillmore West in San Francisco from December 19 to December 22, 1968 – eight months before their first album came out – and released in 1997.

Richie Unterberger wrote on AllMusic, "The band sound only a bit more tentative here than they would in their Woodstock-era incarnation... More interesting to collectors will be the five songs that have not previously appeared on any Santana recording... The sound is excellent and the arrangements a bit more improv-oriented than what ended up on the early studio records.... On its own terms it's a fine release, highlighted by some burning organ-guitar interplay in particular."[2]

Douglas Payne said on All About Jazz, "Live at the Fillmore '68 is an outstanding and welcome glimpse into the exciting musical invention of one of rock's most musically creative groups, Santana. It also offers much for jazz listeners to appreciate.... But these are looser, less polished – and juicier – versions than Santana's better-known later performances of the same tunes.... This music is electric, exciting and exploratory."[4]

John Metzger wrote in The Music Box, "It's full of the spiritual bliss and driving rhythms that faithful fans have come to expect from Santana's concerts....Throughout the nine tracks on Live at the Fillmore 1968, Santana churns out rhythms that melt into a symbiotic whole. The grooves coalesce into a wriggling mass of spiritual energy, upon which the guitarist works his divine powers.... It's an enchanting set that is a true testament to Santana's talent."
