SUPERB Old Houses - WC - by Wakeford Gerald Dix (b. July 4, 1888-d. 1970). This one shows how he painted with Peter Sheppard, ARCA, and Bernice Fenwick Martin. Dix was a sketching companion of both of them, and also painted many of the same subject in the same locations - see more below - all three of them show many of the character and style that our famous GROUP of 7 painted in also. Wakeford Gerald Dix (b. July 4, 1888-d. 1970).
Wakeford Gerald Dix was born on Garden Island, ON. He and his
family later moved to Toronto. His family home in Toronto was at 45 Kendal St,
but he lived as a bachelor at 71 Lombard St. In his later years, he returned to
the family home on Kendal to live with his spinster sister Gladys D Dix, where
he died.
He was a prolific artist in many mediums: painting in oils and watercolour,
portrait photography, jewellery, carving (wood, ivory), bronze casting, . He
worked in his family's tool and die company as a designer. His hobby in fine
arts centred around painting still lifes, portraits, the Toronto skyline and
harbour, and the rural countryside, streams "The Pretty River", woods
and shipyards of Collingwood, Ontario, where he stayed during the summer
months, with his cousin Clara (Holmes) Hambly, who owned Parkside Cabins. Many
of his paintings show the historical representation of these locations.
He loved smoking cigars and was often chewing on one. In Collingwood, he stayed
in an unheated cabin with no plumbing, using an outhouse, and he hired local
taxis to transport him to his painting venue for the day. He ate in town.

The first reference lists:
DIX, Wakeford G., b Garden Isld, Ont 1888,
paint Hu MM RCA
and shows that Wakeford G. Dix is listed in
McMann, Evelyn de R. Royal Canadian Academy of Arts/Academie royale des arts
du Canada: Exhibitions and Members 1880-1979. Toronto: University of
Toronto Press, 1981
However, in this RCA referenced work, his name is incorrectly listed as Wakefield
G. Dix. on page 106.
In the 2nd reference, Wakeford Dix is listed as having exhibited several
paintings, one called "Tug", painted in 1936 and selling for $150.
This book also lists his address in 1936 as 45 Kendal St. Toronto, and 71
Isabelle St in 1939.

Development" by William Colgate 1943 Ryerson Press
p. 250: "Wakeford Dix, die-sinker, is another Toronto amateur,
highly skilled both as modeller and water-colourist. He studied modeling under
Emanuel Hahn, RCA, and painting under Peter Sheppard., ARCA. His landscapes
especially display a sensitive eye for colour and a nice sense of arrangement
in design. As a lieutenant of engineers in the First Great War, he was cited in
despatches by F.M. , Sir Douglas Haig for conspicuous gallantry in action.
" This painting comes in the old beautiful Frame! It is painted in watercolor. It is signed on the back of WC (photo copy attached to back) by Him (see photo). The measurement are 18 1/2 inch x 22 inch framed and 10 inch x 13 1/2 inch wc only.
