Take a good look at one of Harry Bertoia’s wire chairs. You’d probably say it was made of wire but Harry had a different take. "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them,” he said.
A jewellery maker by trade, Harry’s wire chairs were actually a product of necessity, with metal shortages after the second world war making traditional chair manufacturing difficult. The wire design makes the most of the smallest amount of metal.
