ABOUT THE OHIO ASYLUM FOR THE BLIND: The Act establishing the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind was passed April 3, 1837.  Three months later, on July 4, 1837, the first state Blind School in the United States opened in Ohio. At that time, there were only five pupils and one instructor.  The state occupied the school's first building until 1838.  The Ohio Asylum for the Blind, (also known as the Ohio State Blind Asylum, Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind and the Ohio State School for the Blind) then located to East Main Street and opened in October 1839.  Because of overcrowding, in 1869 construction commenced on a new school and on May 21, 1874, the considerably larger school at 240 Parsons Avenue swung open its doors. 79-years later, the school still had one more move to make.  On September 20, 1953, the Parsons Avenue school closed.  Students and staff moved north to the school's current location:  5220 North High Street (on the grounds of a golf course that had gone into default).  The institution was to have relocated earlier; however, construction was delayed due to World War II.  At the North High Street address, the School for the Blind would share the property with the Ohio State School for the Deaf.  As for the abandoned, extremely large, three-story school on Parsons Avenue, it was repurposed, becoming offices for the Ohio Department of Highway Safety, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and later, the Columbus Public Health Department.
