Judge Jules' credibility was waning as a result of grating radio slots and increasingly hackneyed side projects, and there's a sense that Clubbed was something of a response to the problem. No doubt helped by the fact that Jules had no compilation boss to please, the result was a hard, driven, and refreshingly severe balance of techno and trance, with Fatboy Slim, Cevin Fisher, Warrior, and X-Press 2 hinting of his new public taste for breaks and drilled house. There were tufts of self-aggrandizement on the second disc, but the whole package's pure pumped up floor-filling accessibility charmed you away from the flaws and towards renewed respect for a man frequently derided for his naïve commercialism. ~ Dean Carlson
