Superbly-struck and inked and positioned like a clock dial, a GREEN 1840 "PORTSMOUTH Va." circular datestamp on a 3-page letter datelined "U.S. Navy Yard Norfo July 18, 1840" signed "M. Jordan."  Addressed to "Jacob Shepherd, Esq., Boston."

Extremely superior content lists a number of naval uniform items that have not yet been received.

"I have this day enclosed approved bylls to the Navy Agent at your place, Mr. Jarvis, for your two shipments of supplies by the Schooner Grand Island of Narragansett, with the exception of the 60 B. C. jackets, and 30 Pea Jackets, which were decided to be by the inspecting officers, not quite equal to the samples, & for which we shall have to account the decision of the Commissioner before we can receive them...."

"There is some difference between your account of the quantity of some of the articles and ours, for instance, in your shipment by the Grand Island....jackets, ....trowsers...Linen Frocks...Flannel Drawers...Flannel Shirts...

Continues with chastising about quantity, quality and inspections.

Just wonderful content.  An amazing letter.

This is an original folded "stampless" letter with a Virginia State postal marking.

The letter IS present.  You are purchasing BOTH the letter and the postal markings.  The letter has not been separated--it's still here, and pictured.

ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey--namely:  The originating town name and a rate.  In addition to being collectible because the addressee or the town from which it was sent, it is a collectable item of "postal history" because of the rates, markings usage, the addressee or something that might appeal to the collector.

ANOTHER is the writer, the content and the addressee.
