USS ARIZONA BB-39 United States Navy Ship memorial cover

honoring Pearl Harbor 1941 Ships. Cover postmarked from Newport News, VA on Sept 30, 1973.

This 608' Pennsylvania Class battleship was commissioned in 1916.

On December 7, 1941 she was moored at Ford Island

on "battleship row" and was struck by several enemy bombs one of which

penetrated her ammunition magazine and exploded upward in a small mushroom

cloud that destroyed most of her superstructure and caused her to sink.

She lost 1,100 killed. The majority of casualties at Pearl Harbor that day were

aboard the USS Arizona. Today her memorial is open to the public as a silent

remembrance to the men who were killed in this surprise attack. The photo on

the cover is during her 1916 commissioning celebration on the East River in NYC.

She is only second to the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) in the public mind

regarding US Navy history. Seller has over 70 different covers for Pearl Harbor
