Moisture-loving hummingbird trees thrive on 78 to 156 inches of annual rainfall. They handle flooding more successfully than drought, according to the National Tropical Botanical Garden. In home landscapes, they accept alkaline or acidic soil and perform best in full sun and fertile, well-drained locations. Grandiflora is considered to have originated from South Asia and Southeast Asia with possibly Indonesia as the center of diversity. It is closely related to the Australian species, Sesbania Formosa. Today, agathi grows throughout Mexico and the US Southwest region, the warmer areas of South America, and parts of Africa. In West Africa, for example, agathi’s been cultivated for the past 150 years. It’s also an Exotic Plant in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, and Nepal.

Hummingbird Germination:
These seeds have a really hard seed coat and need scarification before sowing to help & speed up germination. This can usually be done by sanding the hard shell of the seed with rough grit sandpaper, then pour a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 24-38 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a small shallow nick in the seed's coat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours. It is Very Important to use a heated propagated heat mat under your tray at least 78 Degrees F before sowing. Germination can take any where from 2 weeks to several months as with any Tropical or Exotic Seed. The propagator will help speed up some of them. But, Patience is needed for most of these seeds, but they're more than Well Worth the Wait!
