The Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the longest cultivated fruit trees.  Native to North Africa and the Middle East, it has been extensively cultivated, with hundreds of varieties now grown for commercial purposes. The Date Palm has provided a food source since ancient times, as well as being regarded a symbol of fertility.  Historically, it has been represented extensively, as on coins and monuments. Cold Hardy to thrive in Zones 8-12. The Date Palm is an evergreen Tree growing to 82 feet Tall, with a  23 feet diameter Canopy. The fruits are oval-cylindrical and bright red to yellow when ripe. The fruits are used to treat respiratory diseases and fevers. Gum obtained from the tree is used to treat diarrhea. The fruits are edible. It is often dried and eaten raw or used as food sweetener. Sap from the tree can be drunk fresh, fermented, or distilled. Seeds are soaked and ground up for animal feed. Seed oil is used in soap making and in cosmetics. Date palm is salt-tolerant. The leaves are used as thatching material. It yields fiber which can be used to make ropes, baskets, hats, and mats. The wood is strong and resistant to termite attacks. It is used in construction and for fuel.
Date Germination:
1) Pour almost boiling hot water over the seeds and allow them to soak for 24 hours.
2) Use a heated propagator, keep the soil at or above 77 F.
3) Plant it in a small container with a very thin layer of soil & only half-buried. Never fully cover Date seeds. Keep moist, but not wet, and do not allow to dry out fully.
4) As with any Tropical Palm seed, germination will be erratic, so patience is needed. Some may come up within 3 weeks, while most will take up to several months to sprout. Well worth the wait!
