Main Description

The CABASA IS A BEADED SHAKER made from a gourd, It can be played both by shaking and by rubbing the net of beads that surround the surface of the gourd, It produces a muted shaker sound that can be either subdued or loud and is sure to bring the sound of Africa to your room

The Cabasa is a WEST AFRICAN PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT consisting of a dried gourd with a woven netting of beads covering the gourd, sometimes known as a SHEKERE or an AGBE

Average size 28cm x 18cm, the colours of the beads vary. The main body of the Cabasa is made from gourd, a large fleshy fruit with a hard skin that has been died and then hollowed out. Gourds are grown naturally, because of this no two gourds are the same so there will be some design variations, however we think that this adds to the appeal of this FASCINATING AND UNIQUE INSTRUMENT.Average size 28cm x 18cm, the colours of the beads vary. DOZENS of COLOURFUL BEADS are suspended by a string net that surrounds the outside of the gourd, when shaken or rubbed they provide the distinctive well known cabasa sound that many people find both calming and exciting.

The instrument is commonly used in West African and Latin American music and can also be heard in many popular forms of music, it is also frequently used in MUSIC THERAPY SESSIONS, particularly with individuals who have physical or neurological disabilities.
