DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT cover with postmark from Devils Tower, WY dated July 13, 2018. Color printed photo cachet #1610 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS.

Devils Tower National Monument in NE Wyoming is one of America's fine National Parks and Monuments. This National Monument, Authorized in 1906 by President Theo Roosevelt, is administered by the National Park Service. The park offers the visitor 1,347 acres of protected land around a very special rock tower. The monolith is the eroded core of a volcano (also see Shiprock) and stands 867 feet above the surrounding land. Native-Americans feel this is a shrine. There is a visitors center that is open in the summer. Climbers enjoy the vertical cracks and fractures on their way to the top. A trail circles the base for visitors who want a short hike.

The 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind  featured the tower as a major backdrop. The tower is located in far north-east Wyoming and requires a major side trip off I-80, but is just off I-90.

Cover franked with a 3 cent Devils Tower stamp #1084 and 55 cent flag stamp.

The cover was prepared on a ungummed, archive quality envelope.
