This vessel was in Pearl Harbor docked next to USS Argonne when the 7 December 1941 attack started. The ship assisted in the fire fighting and salvage efforts at Pearl Harbor until 9 Jan 1942 when she was ordered to the Pacific Theater. The USS Tern now AT-142 served in the South Pacific until the war ended. She towed targets, transported ammunition and searched for mines as an ocean going tug ATO-142.
