This is a scarce variety of one of the very last Australian paper $10 notes printed.

Recent research by the numismatist Dennis Wood has shown that partway through the production of the Fraser / Cole $10 notes, NPA stopped using Plate Identification Letters (PILs).

An explanation for this change is not yet widely known, however it appears that notes without the plate letters came towards the end of the production run.

The location of the plate letter is on the left-hand side of the front of the note, within the black intaglio design about 25mm above the W in B.W.Fraser's signature.

This particular last prefix note has the PIL evident in the required location.
