Background:
The Electorate of Mainz (German: Kurfürstentum Mainz or Kurmainz, Latin: Electoratus Moguntinus), previously known in English as Mentz and by its French name Mayence, was one of the most prestigious and influential states of the Holy Roman Empire. In the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz was also the Primate of Germany (primas Germaniae), a purely honorary dignity that was unsuccessfully claimed from time to time by other archbishops. There were only two other ecclesiastical Prince-electors in the Empire: the Electorate of Cologne and the Electorate of Trier.

The Archbishop-Elector of Mainz was also archchancellor of Germany (one of the three component titular kingdoms of the Holy Roman Empire, the other two being Italy and Burgundy) and, as such, ranked first among all ecclesiastical and secular princes of the Empire, and was second only to the Emperor. His political role, particularly as an intermediary between the Estates of the Empire and the Emperor, was considerable
Lotter, Tobias Conrad 1717 –1777
Sons: Matthäus Albrecht (1741-1810); Georg Friedrich (1744-1801) and Gustav Conrad (1746-1776)
Tobias Conrad Lotter was an engraver, cartographer and publisher from Augsburg, Germany. He married the daughter of the cartographer Matthäus Seutter in 1740. In the same year he began his career as a map engraver with his father in law. Under Seutters direction Lotter created the Atlas Minor between 1740 and 1744. The atlas contained 63 maps - mostly engraved by Lotter - many of which were cartographically borrowed from Seutters Atlas Minor.
After the death of Seutter in 1757 and Seutters son Albrecht Karl in 1762, most of his stock was acquired by Lotter. He removed the name of Seutter from most of the original plates and replaced it with his own. With the support of his sons Matthäus, Georg and Gustav, Lotter succeeded in building on the economic success and professional reputation of his father-in-law.
After Lotters death in 1777 the business began to decline under his two eldest sons. After Matthew Albrecht\\\'s death in 1810, the business declined further and sank into obscurity by the middle of the 19th century.

What is an Antique Map

The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. In the past maps were sold in two forms, as a single sheet (broadsheet) or bound in an atlas or book. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers.

When considering a purchase

The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type (i.e. sea or celestial charts) or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land.
The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection.

Starting a collection & pricing

Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on.
As specialised dealers, we frequently work with first time map buyers who are just starting their collection. Guiding new collectors on their first antique map purchase and helping new collectors to focus their interests is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an rare map dealer.
