This original copper-plate engraved antique print was published between 1796 - 1828 as part of the extensive 24 volumes of Encyclopaedia londinensis, or, Universal dictionary of arts, sciences, and literature by John Wilkes, London.
These prints were engraved by a series of late 18th and early 19th century engravers such as John Pass (Paas) Cornelius Pass, William Canton, John Scott, Andrew Wilson and many others. Most are dated at the foot of the print.

John Pass or Paas 1783–1832 was an English engraver & painter. Pass was an established copper plate engraver in Pentonville, London. He made plates for The History, Civil and Ecclesiastical, and Survey of the Antiquities of Winchester (1798–1801) by John Milner. John Wilkes the London bookseller, who was from Winchester, knew him at the end of the 18th century, and took him on for illustrations of his Encyclopaedia Londoniensis. Pass produced plates for volume 13 of the work.
John Paas (name used legally) was murdered in Leicester by James Cook, in a criminal case that attracted wide attention. He was aged 49, a partner in the firm Paas & Co. of High Holborn, London, engravers. He was in Leicester as a travelling salesman of specialist hardware. Cook, a printer and bookbinder, was exhibited on a gibbet after being hanged, the last British criminal to be so treated.
The firm of C. and A. Paas & Co. was in business at various Holborn addresses in the second half of the 18th century. One of the partners, Cornelius Paas, an engraver from Germany, came to London around 1765.
Wilkes was an English printer, bookseller and stationer. He was a Freeman of Winchester and proprietor of the Hampshire Chronicle. With Peter Barfoot he ran the British Directory Office in London, which published the Universal British Directory from 1790 to 1798 after obtaining a royal patent.
He compiled, digested and arranged the Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, universal dictionary of arts, sciences, and literature, which was published between about 1801 and 1828 in 24 volumes, with three volumes of copperplate engravings. Some extensive articles were also published separately, viz. Horology (1811). Wilkes took on the engraver John Pass, of Pentonville, who worked on volume 13.
He owned Milland House, the chief residence in Milland, West Sussex. It was described later as a remote, old-fashioned country house of antique appearance, and difficult of access, arranged in a style that would now be considered out of date. It contained a brewery, bakery, servants hall...The house was built by Peter Bettesworth in 1584, and was completely destroyed by fire November 6th, 1901. The interior contained a very fine staircase in oak, of Jacobean character, and the drawing room was fitted with some oak panelling of the same character and date.

The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. In the past maps were sold in two forms, as a single sheet (broadsheet) or bound in an atlas or book. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers.
When considering a purchaseThe first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type (i.e. sea or celestial charts) or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land.
The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection.
Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on.
