IJN KONGO 1939

Lead ship of her class of battlecruisers, built at Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness in 1913. Heavily modified by the Japanese Navy during the 1920's and 30's, and eventually classed as a fast battleship, as seen here. In her 1939 configuration: 36,600 tons, speed 30 knots, armed with 8-14in, 14-6in, 8-3in guns. She saw extensive action throughout the war, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Torpedoed and sunk by submarine USS Sealion in the Formosa Strait in November 1944.
