Pieter Cramer - (1721 Amsterdam - 1776 ebenda).
Niederländische Kaufmann und Entomologe. Cramer war ein wohlhabender Kaufmann, der mit Leinen und spanischer Wolle handelte. Er legte eine umfangreiche Naturkunde-Sammlung an (Conchylien, Versteinerungen, Mineralien, Insekten). Insbesondere sammelte er Schmetterlinge aus den niederländischen Kolonien (zum Beispiel Surinam, Ceylon, Sierra Leone, Indonesien), deren Illustrationen, die der Amsterdamer Künstler Gerrit Wartenaar anfertigte, dann von 1775 bis 1782 beim Buchhändler Johannes Baalde veröffentlichen ließ. Sie erschienen in 33 Lieferungen an rund 270 Subskribenten, später zusammengefasst in 4 Bände, hier werden die Tafeln (Plates) 1-95 des ersten Bandes von 1779 angeboten.

Die Abbildungen sind alt handkoloriert und lebensgroß und von Beschreibungen von Pieter Cramer oder Caspar Stoll begleitet, wobei erstmals das damals neue Klassifizierungs-System von Carl von Linné (Linneaus) verwendet wurde und jeden Schmetterling in drei Gattungen eingeteilt und viele wurden das erste Mal benannt und wissenschaftlich beschrieben.

The plate from Cramers, Exotic Butterflies from Three Parts of the World: Asia, Africa and America, is part of the important history of entomology and lepidopterology. Abundantly described and beautifully illustrated by the artist Gerrit Wartenaar from Amsterdamit it was the first book on exotic butterflies using the new system developed by Carl von Linné (1707-1778) for naming and classifying animals.
Each species were depicted in life-size and illustrated both the upper and lower wings for each.Each butterfly was assigned to one of the three then-existing Lepidopteran genera and many of them was named for the first time and provided with a formal scientific description!
Pieter Cramer (1721-1776) was a wealthy Dutch Spanish wool merchant and entomologist who had a passion for insects. He built up a large collection, especially of butterflies, from Dutch traders and settlers in Surinam. Wishing to publish the rarest pieces of his collection, Cramer called upon Gerrit Wartenaar who painted more than 1650 of the rarest specimens from the two Indies, Asia, Africa and America from his collection and from other Dutch collectors. With the help of the entomologist Caspar Stoll and the booksellers S. J. Baalde of Amsteldam and J. van Schoonhoven of Utrecht, who took on the publication at their own expense, the first issues appeared in 1775. Cramer died in 1776 before the publication finished. Caspar Stoll took over the project, the plates are from the first part with the plates 1 - 95 in old handcolored copper engravings of lepidoptera!
