Prince
Edward
Island
Canada’s smallest
province, 140 miles
long, offers excellent
camping, great roads
pristine beauty
Those who make their homes on
Canada's Prince Edward Island refer to
outsiders as, “people from away." This
included my wife and me, for literally
speaking it was from "away" that we
had come. Our motorcycle had carried
us across the North American continent
to Canada's smallest province.
To reach P.E.I. we drove our
two-wheeler onto the steel deck of the
Lord Selkirk for the 90-minute crossing
from Caribou, Nova Scotia, to Wood
Islands, P.E.I.
For the motorcyclist, riding ferries is
an extra-cautious maneuver. We were
riding two-up. At the signal of the dock
loader, I put the bike into gear and
started slowly down the inclined ramp.
Keeping a sharp eye out for open
grates. I wheeled the cycle into the
tunnel at the front of the ship. Steel
decking and metal grating can offer
insecure contact between the tires and
the deck.
I carefully moved down the full length
of the phip watching for oil spots. The
deckhand motioned us up front and to
one side where I put the bike on its
sidestand.
In riding ferries, the cyclist finds
himself going to the front of the line, first
on and first off. Not only that, riding a
motorcycle means cheaper fares, too.
P.E.I. still retains its pristine beauty.
Narrow paved roads radiate out from
Charlottetown, the capital and only city
on the island. Three scenic routes have
been laid out to introduce the visitor to
the 140-mile-long island — its places,
its buildings and its people.
There is Lady Slipper Drive, named
for the Provincial flower, where the
cyclist can explore the westernmost
part of the island. Then there is Blue
Heron Drive that skirts the coastline of
the islands central region, and lastly,
the King’s Byway which winds its way
around the eastern end of the island.
The favorite for us turned out to be
the Kings Byway. The engine hummed
beneath us as we headed toward
land's end at the eastern tip. It's the kind...

And much more!
