Nathaniel Gordon was raised a slaver by his father, and grew up continuing this criminal enterprise. He was responsible for bringing 100s of Africans to the US, with the death of 1000s more, often packing his ships with children to make more room. An Original Complete Civil War issue of Harper's Weekly, March 8, 1862, w 14pp War news, illus incl a 1/2 page illus of the Execution of Slave Trader Gordon, captured in 1860 with a ship full of African children- he reported said the children were easier to transport and cow into submission. After delays, in 1862 Abraham Lincoln refused to intervene, relating his repugnance to such a creature, and Gordon , a prisoner in the notorious NY City Tombs, was hanged, Feb 21. 1862.
