USS Enterprise was commissioned in 1961, and the 1,123 foot "Big E" had a long record of service (51 years) and involvement in nearly every major overseas campaign. In 1969 an accidental fire was started when a Zuni rocket exploded under the wing of a F-4 aircraft on the forward flight deck. Casualties included 28 dead, 343 wounded and 15 aircraft destroyed on January 14, 1969. This proud vessel served off Viet Nam five times between 1965 and 1972, twice in 1972-73, and 1974-75. She was decommissioned 1 December 2012.

A new USS Enterprise (CVN-80) is scheduled to enter the Navy in 2025!
