Please see the additional 48 pictures we embedded below the description. This auction is for a truly one-of-a-kind lot of rare vintage Sound Vision CMOS-PRO professional studio digital cameras and related items from the estate of a manufacturing & test engineer who worked for Computer Design & Automation, Leaf Systems, and Sound Vision Inc., three companies co-founded by serial entrepreneur and digital photography innovator Bob Caspe, inventor of the game-changing Leaf Digital Camera Back amongst other innovative imaging products. The late engineer worked with Caspe starting in 1985 and worked on and off with him until 2003. We will provide his name to the winning bidder if he or she requests it. As for the lot being sold here, please note we have not tested or attempted to clean or service any of these items and are selling them as a parts and/or collectibles lot and in as-found condition. We are unsure as to how used or unused / complete or incomplete any of the items included are although they do appear to range in physical condition (further detail below). We are not certain we have correctly identified all of the components comprising the lot but as best as we could tell the following items are included:

We are unsure as to when the cameras were made but believe they likely date to the late 1990s based on the 1998 product launch. When the CMOS-PRO was introduced it had an MSRP of $1995. That may seem expensive, but at the time the camera was marketed “the first affordably priced pro 3-shot digital camera…designed for professional studio photographers, graphic artists and publishing professionals that doesn’t compromise your image quality or budget.” Unlike the 1-shot digital cameras on the market at the time, the 3-shot CMOS-PRO used a 3-color filter wheel using an active pixel CMOS sensor on an 800,000 pixel monochrome array. The crisp and clean images that result have the equivalent resolution and sharpness of a 2.4 megapixel 1-shot array. It was unlike anything else on the market at the time offering the results comparable to expensive contemporary studio cameras at a far lower cost.

Because the cameras in this lot appear to be of several iterations of the CMOS-PRO design we do not know to what degree their engineering and/or schematics are compatible with each other. The lot captures some of the range of development and innovation that we believe culminated in the 1000 Series CMOS-PRO, two examples of which are included. This pair is marked CMOS-PRO. 1000 SERIES. SOUND VISION. MADE IN THE U.S.A. Five of the other cameras are marked CMOS-PRO. SOUND VISION. MADE IN THE U.S.A. The most “primitive” camera with the fully matte black casing is unmarked. We opened up the cameras to ensure that they contained their internal components and found that they all do appear to be intact. One of the cameras is missing 4 side-panel case screws. Five of the camera bodies come with a plastic lens mount cover. The 2 CMOS-PRO 1000 SERIES cameras measure roughly 6" x 4" x 2" at their furthest points and each weigh roughly 1 lb 15 oz. The remaining 6 cameras measure roughly 5 7/8" x 4" x 1 3/4" at their furthest points. Three of these cameras weigh roughly 1 lb 7 oz and 3 weigh roughly 1 lb 11 oz. We are unsure as to why there is a difference in weight between these cameras, though discovering why that is sounds like a fun project for the next owner. We did notice that it appears that Sound Vision removed the top tripod mount for later versions as the 1000 Series cameras no longer have one. Speaking of which, we do not know what components the CMOS-PRO 1000 Series boxed kit came with and thus are unsure as to whether or not the kit in our lot is complete. We have left all of the components that were in the box as they were found. It does appear that Sound Vision offered such CMOS-PRO kits as custom packages as well so again we are not certain how “off the shelf” our kit might be.

Aside from the original box and the printed items, there appears to be a duplicate of all of the other components that comprise our version of the CMOS-PRO Series 1000 kit. We thus feel comfortable describing the lot as including nearly 2 full Series 1000 kits…and then some. On that front we turn our attention to the rest of the components included in this lot. There are 12 Computar F1.3 C-Mount TV lenses. The 5 V5013 50mm lenses are marked COMPUTAR. TV LENS. 50MM 1:1.3. MADE IN JAPAN. The 7 V1213 12.5mm lenses are marked COMPUTAR. TV LENS. 12.5MM 1:1.3. MADE IN JAPAN. The 3 tube sets are marked C MOUNT TV LENS EXTENSION TUBE SET. JAPAN. 40MM. 20MM. 10MM. Three of the 12.5mm lenses and 2 of the 50mm lenses come with their original boxes, as do the 3 extension tube sets. The 50mm lens boxes are marked COMPUTAR UPC V5013. EAN V5013. 50MM. F1.3 W/1. The 12.5mm lens boxes are marked COMPUTAR UPC V1213. EAN V1213. 12.5MM F1.3 W/1. The extension tube set boxes are unmarked. All of the lenses come with front and rear caps with the exception of one of the 12.5mm lenses which is missing a front cap. The lens with the missing cap has a bent rim on the front part of the lens.

These cables appear to have all of their pins intact and each measure roughly 111" in length. The two 15-pin studio strobe flash sync cables are unmarked. These cables do have some damaged and/or missing/broken pins. The 15-pin plug ends on these cables also differ from one another. The other ends have single post-type plugs that match. These cables measure roughly 72" in length. The 5 V5013 50mm lenses measure roughly 2 1/2" in length including the lens caps and each weigh roughly 7.3 oz. The 7 V1213 12.5mm lenses measure roughly 2 1/4" in length including the lens caps and each weigh roughly 5 oz. The aperture dials on all 12 lenses appear to function as they should, opening and shutting the apertures when turned. The three extension tube sets measure roughly 3 1/8" in length and each of them weighs roughly 1.6 oz. There are what appear to be 3 loose filters that we believe to be BG-39 IR filters as noted in the brochure specifications. There is also a single eyepiece-type C-Mount size lens or component that we were unable to identify. All or some of the components have scratches, nicks, dings, dusty areas, general wear, and normal storage-type wear. The cardboard box measures roughly 17" x 16 1/4" x 4 1/4". The box has normal wear and tear as expected with a vintage box that has been stored away for years. The combined weight of all of the items is roughly 25 lbs 4 oz.
