Far Gallery 746 Madison Avenue
Following the war the street level became home to the Far Gallery—and upscale art gallery that would remain a Madison Avenue fixture until 1972.
The Far Gallery opened in 1934 on Madison Ave., NY and it closed in the 1970’s.
Murray Roth, associate direc tor of the FAR Gallery, 746 Madison Avenue, and an ap praiser and authenticator of graphic art, died Thursday at his home, 152 East 94th Street, after a long illness. His age was 61.
Mr. Roth was born here and attended City College. Shortly after the FAR Gallery was opened in 1934, he joined as associate director. He took an important part in getting the gallery to concentrate on signed and number prints of original graphic art and helped promote posters as a fine art. As early as 1938 the gallery exhibited Toulouse‐Lautrec posters.
He served overseas with the Army in World War II. After the war, throiugh contacts with collectors and museums, he helped elevate the stature of etchings, lithographs, drawings and other graphics with the art public.
Among the many artists, whose work he promoted, were Raphael Soyer, Leonard Baskin, Rufino Tamayo and Jose Ortega.
