Carnegie Safari Mosasaurus Dinosaur Toy Figure Prehistoric Collectible

Long retired model from 1990, approx 5.5 inches length

The Carnegie Collection began in 1988 as a collaboration between the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh and Safari Ltd. The Carnegie Museum wished to have a line of high-quality, scientifically accurate scale models to sell in their gift shop. They hired artist Forest Rogers to create the sculpts for the models and contracted with Safari Ltd. to produce and distribute them. Previous to this, Safari Ltd. did not make animal toys, but acted as a US distributer for brands like Schleich, Bullyland, and AAA. Safari contracted with Schleich and Bullyland to create molds based on Rogers' designs, and the earliest models were mass produced in the same facilities that made Schleich models. In return, Schleich was able to sell the Carnegie Collection as their own brand in Europe
