This is a group of 10 hand written letters between Charles Wale, Thomas Brearley, William Suggitt, and George Stevenson. The letters are dated between 1754-1963.

Some interesting content to some of the letters and most can be read as well. It mentions Thomas travelling to St Petersburg in Russia in a fragment letter dated 1757 written from Riga. Riga is the capital city of Latvia. Also mentions a Captain Wilbore. .

A letter dated 1754 from Charles Wale in Riga and has the name Mr George  Stevenson , the address on the front is Baldera.

Charles says could he George please spare Brearey this evening as there is going to be a Grand Masquerade at Campenhausen's ( he was a Russian chap of significant wealth called Johann von Camperhausen ( 1689-1758 ) . So this was going to be a grand firework party of illuminations far beyond any that has been before.

Also it says Camperhausen distributes among the soldiers this day hospital almshouses,  and 500 in money, 25 bullocks, 50 sheep, and 200 soup meals as well as brandy. It is signed by Charles Wale.

Baldera ...I cannot find a place by that name but in one of the letters Charles who lives in Riga says he rode down to Baldera in his sledge. Which of course will be a carriage on a sleigh pulled by horses.

A letter dated 1755 is addressed to Thos Brearey on board Capt. Hammond at Baldera. And he says the letter will find you windbound at Baldera and fear you want some fresh provisions so I have sent you down a little veale. My service to Capt. ? and about Navy protection. and he ends with wishing you prosperous voyages. So is Capt. Hammond a SHIP or a ships captain ?

They talk of a fine of £160 to be paid to lawyers back in 1763.

A really interesting double page letter dated 1756 to Thomas Brearey Junior with no address from Charles Wale at Riga.  He talks about Hull first and Thomas and Capt. Hammond arriving safe after a horrible and tedious passage and he wants to meet them both in London. He says he went to Nordens and drunk one quarter  of Rhine wines off at a draught, then went home. He went to supper at the Duke of Atholl and they toasted continually Brearey , Hammond, Hammond Brearey, Colne Priory, Tadcaster and Miss Kitty sung, old women danced and so on. He then quotes some days from his Almanack ( diary of the Georgian period ).

20th Nov, Hammond Guild and The Kings Speech came by post - 22 Nov. Wrote to Jno Darling and remitted him Capt. Applebys bill for £34-10 shillings, also our houses bill for £15-9-10. - 22nd Dec Mr ? set off for Poland, 7th January Captain Miller went down to his ship for fair wind sailing. January 14th Mr Shard from St Petersburg set out this morning on his way to England, sent to Darling by him an old silver watch to be repaired and some prints of the Imperial family of Russia to be framed and returned. January 20th the weather this day very bad, thaw with rain, no venturing on ? all communication stopped with Baldera , not 6 fine days this winter, no getting goods to town. Bad prospect of trade , uncertainty of war or peace , troops in readiness, Fullerton, Greaves O-Hara promoted. Sawneys favourite dog lost or dead, Capt, Miller open water at Baldera, Cap, Cooper had a good quick passage to Aberdeen. Old mother Miller and Miss Rodena starving, poor old Countess lost, my 3 sheep , 3 lambs and Raven all well. Two handsome young virgins whipt on the market not for their honesty, 4 Grenadiers padogued. Sawneys wife sends me an apple tart for you but postage too much. He then stops there quoting from his almanack - diary.
He talks about quite a few bills and money to and from various people.

The interesting note that two handsome virgins were whipt in the market place , not for their honesty. The silver pocket watch sent to London for repair and the Imperial Royal family prints being framed as well as the apple tart being too expensive to send by post. ( nothing changed there then )

Thomas Brearey was a merchant originally from Tadcaster, England and he was in correspondence with Charles Wale Esq originally of Earls Colne Priory Estate in Essex.  But living in Riga, Latvia as well. Both being merchants.

Charles Wale and the family can be found as being merchants in Riga and Narva where he traded ships masts, amongst other things. Various company names with other men include Wale, Fraser & Co - Wale, Auchterlony & Co - Wale , Pearson & Auchterlony.

Please see photographs provided for more details and visual confirmation of condition.
There are normal signs of age and use wear, mostly on the edges and corners.
The letters are folded, creased, and discoloured. Some of the letters are also torn down the folds. 2 are incomplete.

The letters tend to be 7 and half inch x 8 inch and smaller bits of paper. Interesting reading about the trade merchants during the 18th Century.

This is one of the archive of antiques which belonged to a well known York historian, the late Mr Darrell Buttery MBE 1941 - 2022. He was a teacher, writer, and a very keen historian. Born in Guisborough to Olive and George Buttery. He was keen at all sorts of things during his early years being involved in the theatre and acting.  He wrote The Streets of York, Four Centuries of Change ( 2018 ) book. He collected many items YORK related as well as paperwork and ephemera, the type of items which are usually burnt or thrown out long ago. Keeping his own family scrap albums. Some very good quality art pencil sketch books as well as watercolours too. Photograph albums and I am sure many photographs will never have been seen before so great for the York - Yorkshire collectors even now. Scrap albums with some fascinating contents.  Just a few of the most unusual items to follow in a few weeks.

Scale is usually an English 1 penny coin which is 20mm in diameter which is just short of 7/8ths of an inch in diameter, or a universal Coke can, and we all know how big those are.

If you see A/F = a/f in the title or description it means "as found" condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage.
