The BMW M5 is a series of German sports cars, each time a revised and tuned version of the BMW 5 Series. The first BMW M5s were presented to the general public in 1984 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Its serial production started a year later and is still ongoing. Currently, series production is concentrated at the BMW AG plant in Dingolfing, Germany.

The M5 series was developed with the aim of acquiring a larger share of the sports car segment by BMW, as well as increasing the commercial success of the 5 series. Six generations of the BMW M5 were produced in series production. The first one was based on the BMW 535i, but used a completely different engine, taken from the BMW M1. Over the years 1985-2018, the maximum power of the engines increased from 286 hp to 560 hp in the latest generation, launched in 2018. It is worth noting that in 2014, a limited series of BMW 30 Jahre M5 was launched on the market, which was made only in the number of 300 copies, and its engine was tweaked and achieves a power of 600 HP, thanks to which the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3, 9 seconds
