The Degtyaryov-Shpagin large-calib,, tan. gu.. (short DShKT or DShKMT index GRAU - 56-P-542M) is a modified version of the infantry machine gu.. of the same name... for armament of armored vehicles.

Since tanks needed additional armament (e.g., the T-34 also had a machine gu.. near the window of the tank's commander), there was a need for tank protection against aircraft, which could not drop bom.. on tanks, but only dive before attacking from their built-in gu... The DShK was excellent for destroying aircraft because of its large calib...
