Harley-Davidson Wins 10-Mile National;
»»» Weatherly Takes Title at Richmond
LEFT at the post at the start of the
race, “Lil’ Joe” Weatherly of Nor-
■^folk, Va., came all the way from last
place to win the 10-Mile National crown,
Sunday, May 28, over a field which in-
cluded four other national champions be-
sides himself. Close behind Joe at the
finish came Chet Dykgraaf of Hammond,
Ind., with Paul Goldsmith, third; Jimmy
Chann, fourth; Leo Anthony, fifth; Ray
Goff, sixth; and Buck Brigance, seventh.
All seven rode Harley-Davidsons, making
it a clean sweep on the Richmond, Va.,
half-mile track. The time was 9 min.,
30.2 secs.
Goldsmith, who hails from St. Clair
Shore, Mich., gave notice of his cham-
pionship intentions witfi a brilliant riding
performance in winning the 5-Mile Ex-
pert Final on Saturday, May 27. Of the
18 events presented during the two-day
program sponsored by the Virginia Motor-
Ji >■
a further feature of this two-day motor-
cycling meet was the club uniform con-
test held Sunday afternoon between track
events. The winning group, out of a
smartly dressed assembly of competing
clubs, was the Norfolk Motorcycle Club.
Saturday’s 3-star, broadsliding activities
were thrill-packed from the first Novice
Heat right up to the checkered flag ending
the 5-Mile Expert Final. Six of the nine
events, including all three Expert events,
produced Harley-Davidson winners.
cycle Clubs, Inc., 13 were won by Har-
ley-Davidson riders.
These were two of the highlights of a
gala weekend which was thoroughly en-
joyed by a great crowd of motorcycling
fans. Many of the visitors found pleasant
entertainment at the Saturday night rally
presented by the Richmond Motorcycle
Club. Two orchestras, a modern dance
band and a hill-billy “combo,” provided
music to suit practically every taste.
Historic places of interest, so plentiful
in and around Richmond, formed the
itinerary of various tours enjoyed by
many visitors to the Cavalier State. And

JUST as a powerful magnifying glass "blows up" a tiny detail on
a picture, so does this Sheffield Precisionaire air gage "stretch
out" or magnify dimensions of a number of machined parts at the
Harley-Davidson Factory, enabling the operator to maintain close toler-
ances. Eleven of these amazing gages are in use — one model with
such great amplification that a one-thousandth inch dimension appears
as two inches on the scale! So supersensitive is the gage, which oper-
ates from the plant's regular compressed air supply, that if a hair
(measuring only three-thousandth of an inch) were placed in the gage,
the cork-like float would bounce way off the scale! Another of the
many tools of science used by Harley-Davidson to rigidly control
quality in the manufacture of the world's most dependable motorcycles.

good events lately including an Easter egg

well, and we would like to challenge any other
motorcycle club that has a team to a good
bowling match. Perhaps this can’t be arranged
until next fall or winter, but some of you hot
shots keep it in mind. We find bowling is a
wonderful way to maintain club interest and
keep the gang together.
