A VINTAGE Kosta enameled bowl engraved to the base (Kosta 57203 Warff). To my knowledge this means the piece was designed in 1972- the 72 (after the 5 is the year of production). This is an incredibly rare piece designed by Ann and Goran Warff BEFORE Kosta and Boda amalgamated (in 1976). I have only seen a handful in this style over the last 20 years. They were done in very limited numbers due to the complexity of the construction. The bowls are particularly rare- I can’t find any for sale in a retail situation worldwide at the moment. I recently sold one of the vases in the same design and found several values for the vase at that time- one sold on 1stdibs for US$2000 (approx. AU $2750). A pair of the vases was auctioned in Christies of New York in 2012 and there was also one of the vases on-line in the Modernism Gallery in Florida USA for US $950 (approx. AU $1300).

This is a rare piece of glass history by highly-esteemed artists. There’s a real allure to vintage Kosta (Boda) and this piece is one of Warff’s most highly-regarded designs. I love the rawness of this style. There’s a dynamic display of colour and movement that seem to capture the essence of a meteor shower at sunset. The awe-inspiring feeling of this rare cosmic event takes me over whenever I experience this one. The complexity of the craftsmanship is just as inspiring. The sparkling flow of colour created by the enamels in the crystal is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. This effect has been achieved in multiple stages. The final stage allows bubbles and streaks of light to pass through the thick crystal. The bubbling of the dark tint applied in the final stages of the construction is fascinating- I have no idea how this would have been achieved. This piece exhibits creative experimentation at its best.

This is a highly-complex piece of art. These days this design attracts such attention that Christies of New York accepts it. There’s a decent amount of Kosta Boda out there, but this is one of the rarest of any Kosta (Boda) design I’ve ever had. This piece also retains the original Kosta decal label which cements its investment appeal. What’s also interesting about this one is that it has also been signed, “Bengt Heintze Kosta 1973”. Bengt Heintze produced some of Warff’s more complicated designs in the early-1970’s (including various unique pieces). This further adds to the allure of what’s on offer here.

This one will be passed from one generation to the next. Instead of adding to global pollution consider buying hand-made vintage pieces that have since inspired artists the world over- there are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill. This piece from 1972 is an obvious investment- values have steadily climbed over the years and this trend should only continue as more and more of our décor items get mass-produced by machines.

OUR PACKING

A charge of $4.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up as landfill. Our $4.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to bike the package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
