A beautiful double-sided repoussé silver Qilin pendant with an adorning 1/20th 12k gold-filled chain holding nephrite, jadeite, and carved carnelian beads, with the entire piece weighing 180 grams. Quite a hefty version of this popular 19th-century design. Qilin pendants were traditionally made for young men in China throughout the 19th century seeking employment, and were originally paired with a large silver chain. Over the years since, it's become traditional for some Eastern pieces of jewelry to be "Westernized" to attract appeal. The inclusion of the beaded chain, presumably during the 20th century, is a sign of this exact phenomenon. The carnelian beads carved into a tri-faced Buddha design are identified to be genuine Chinese Carnelian Buddha-Head beads, which are a scarce find remaining from the 1980's when these specific beads surged into popularity. Along with the beautiful addition of fine nephrite, jadeite & carnelian beads, the Qilin pendant is in magnificent condition for its age. It was immediately obvious that someone had taken great care of this pendant over the centuries, and there is visibly little to no scuffing, wear, or damage on the piece whatsoever. Most ALL of the original, small needlework designs & decorations on the pendant are entirely intact. Even the highest points on this pendant (which are usually the first to wear down, and lose their detail) are in almost like-new condition. The pendant also still includes all of the original bells, bell chains, and internal bell pieces. There are four bells shaped into a "purse" or "clasp" shape, with a fifth central bell resembling a larger, rounded man with an exposed belly. Each bell still rings perfectly.
