After his death by mysterious circumstances, Antinous, lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian, was deified and often likened to Osiris in the Egyptian god statues that paid homage to his memory. This work of Egyptian art, discovered in Hadrian's villa in 1738, is sculpted with the classic headdress, ancient symbols, and chiseled musculature that epitomized the image in Egypt.
