Antique Map-SPANISH SUCCESSION WAR BY DUC DE MALBOROUGH NEAR TIENEN-Dumont-1729

Description: This map originates from: 'Histoire militaire du prince Eugene de Savoye, du Prince et Duc de Marlborough et du Prince de Nassau-Frise ou l'on trouve un detail des principales actions de la derniere guerre et des batailles et sieges commandez par ces trois Genereaux.' (Military history of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Duke of Marlborough and the Prince of Nassau-Friesland during the war of the Spanish Succession.) by Jean Dumont et Jean Rousset de Missy (supplement), published in the Hague by Isaac van der Kloot and Jean Neaulme from 1729-1747). This work also containd the famous battle scenes by Jan Huchtenburgh (1647-1733).

Publisher/Cartographer: Jean Dumont. Jean Dumont Baron de Carlscroon (1667-1727) was a French publicist. He followed the profession of arms; but, not obtaining promotion so rapidly as he expected, he quit the service and travelled through different parts of Europe. He stopped in Holland with the intention of publishing an account of his travels. But in the interval, at the request of his bookseller, he wrote and published several pamphlets, which were eagerly sought after, owing to the unceremonious manner in which he treated the ministry of France. This freedom having deprived him of all hope of employment in his own country, he thought of forming a permanent establishment in that where he resided, and accordingly commenced a course of lectures on public law. The project succeeded far beyond his expectations; and some useful compilations which he published about the same period made him favorably known in other countries. The emperor appointed him his historiographer, and some time afterwards conferred on him the title of baron de Carlscroon. He died in Vienna.
