Vintage Eames DAX Herman Miller Shell Chair Mid Century Modern 1st Generation. Original Owner! This is a classic example of the Charles and Ray Eames LAX molded fiberglass arm shell chair for Herman Miller in one of the original colors, lemon yellow. This is an early chair made by Zenith with the rope edge, X-base, and checkerboard Zenith paper label. It is in good to fair condition which would be expected for it's age. It does have some stains in the seat that seem to be from the shock mounts on the underside, which is not uncommon for vintage translucent fiberglass chairs. One of the original bottom leg pieces was replaced with a rubber tip as shown in the photos. There is also some staining around the chair edges. The fiberglass is clearly visible beneath it's beautiful smooth finished surface. Please see photos and zoom in for further details. Circa early 1950s.

The identifiers for this rare chair are the rope edge, larger shock mounts, type of glide feet, lemon yellow original color, translucent fiberglass, and authentic checker board Zenith/Herman Miller Label. To add to its desirability this example is the lounge chair version with an X-base. Own a piece of furniture design history.

The Eames design team, designed the molded fiberglass chair in 1948 for the International Competition of Low-Cost Furniture Design held by the Museum of Modern Art. Production began in 1950 by Zenith Plastics for Herman Miller and the chairs were offered for sale that year. That same year the Museum of Modern Art placed it in its permanent collection.
