WMF Jugendstil Copper & Brass Friar and Cat Chamberstick c.1905
Item Description
A very stylish Jugendstil German copper and brass novelty chamberstick by renowned makers WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) and dating from around 1905. The chamberstick is mounted on an oval copper tray base with a raised rim and is mounted with a heavy thick cut image of a friar and his cat cut in a single piece of brass and riveted to the base. The cat arches its back with its tail raised forming the handle. The friar is dressed in a monks robe tied around the waist and he carries a rosary hanging below a round tray on which is mounted a copper candle holder, probably imitating a glass of ale. The brass has nicely incised detail to both sides and the copper has a hand planished finish and is a wonderful display piece. The base has an impressed early running stork mark.
