The first thing you noticed is the hard cover, textured to resemble wood. There are around 20 great photographs in an inner sleeve, plus a 19-song disc of some of Phil's softer and simpler, and beautiful music. Phil displays incredible writing abilities in the 144-page book. I'm sure at some point he was hesitant to release this incredibly intimate report of his time in the Norwegian mountains, where he states all the confusion derived from his girlfriend's recent dumping him for his best friend. Let me tell you again, this is not some loose and disjointed ramblings compiled and printed. This really works as a cohesive story-like book. All the myth that surrounded Bon Iver's debut has happened in a much more overlooked event that rendered a beautiful work of art called Dawn. I'm so happy I put my money in this. Phil Elverum was born on May 26th 1978 i Anacortes, WA. "Once I realized that it was possible to make songs and books and pictures and not do any other "work", my life got hyperactive. Beginning in 1995 I recorded tapes by myself on borrowed machines, I was always recording at K Records. I worked on albums for 1 year each before releasing them, usually beginning work at dawn. I did 4 albums in this way under the band name "the Microphones." This all culminated in the "death" themed album "Mount Eerie". In 2002 I went on an endless tour and stopped for the winter in northern Norway and died."
The music of "Mount Eerie" and "The Microphones" has always been a very personal, almost voyeuristic, view inside the mind of Phil Elverum. "Dawn" delves deep into an intensely creative period of Elverum's life, with a beautiful mix of journal writing, jokes, photographs, and music. This 144-page hardcover collection chronicles a winter spent alone in a cabin in arctic Norway, wrestling with ghosts, gathering wood, acting out myths--3 months of unfiltered brain torrents interspersed with drawings. It comes with a 17-track CD of songs written during that time, songs that have become well known over the years through recordings and live performances. The CD is a kind of lost album finally recorded properly, pared down to just guitar and vocals. Also included is a 16-page color photo booklet.
