This delightful wood sculpting of a Song Bird, Cardinal
or Red Bird which is the official state bird of no fewer than seven eastern
states and the only red North American bird with a crest has been left in its
natural state to enjoy. . I especially love the feet. This is not dated but due
to the feet I believe this is one of his earlier wood carvings. This is signed
on the bottom by Eugene Ownby as shown in the attached photographs. This Chickadee
measures approximately 6x5x2 and is in wonderful condition. Please see the
attached photographs as they are considered a part of my description.
The Great Tennessee Folk
Artist Eugene T. Ownby(1933-2018) was from Gatlinburg in Sevier County TN. Mr. Ownby
was proud to use the native woods of the Great Smoky Mountains like Buckeye,
Bass, Cedar and White Pine. Mr. Ownby touched so many people for decades with
his charming wood carvings and anyone having one of his beautiful carvings will
certainly be proud to own it as part of a collection. Folk art is the art of
the people that is often an expression of community life and culture and is
usually handcrafted and useful, functional or decorative. It is distinguished
from academic or professional art that is more cosmopolitan or self-conscious.
