The Hub, Fighter Leader, by Roger A Freeman, subtitled 'The Story of Hub Zemke, Americas great World War II fighter commander'

Published by Grub Street in 1995, 668 pages. Hardback - c.18cm by 25cm (A48V)

From the inside front fly leaf: Stars and Bars, the result of a painstaking 20 years of research, is the most comprehensive book ever written on the American aces of the post-World War One period. Containing over one million words, its coverage of the American aces of the Spanish Civil War, Sino-Iapanese War, World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War is exhaustive.

The great bulk of the book is devoted to almost 1400 biographies of individual fighter pilots, with introductory notes providing, in the majority of cases, place and date of birth, previous and later military service, and awards and decorations.

But the most extraordinary achievement of the author is his research into the claims of the pilots. In every case, the biographies include a full list of all claims made, by date, time, type, location and type of aircraft flown, together with (in many cases) the serial/Buno of the aircraft flown to achieve the claim, and a note of the author's sources.

When the 350 photographs are added - many never before published - this becomes a unique and momentous publication of true historical value, which the author believes provides most of the answers, and may be considered the penultimate word on the subject.

Condition of the book is generally good. The dust jacket has some minor scuffs, and light creasing and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. The front fly leaf has been price clipped.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
