Commemorative coin of Canada "50 years of the USSR-Canada Super Series" 2 dollars, 2022

The Royal Canadian Mint released into circulation on September 28, 2022 two dollar bimetallic coins, which are dedicated to the 50th anniversary of one of the most important hockey games in the history of this sport. The hockey teams of the USSR and Canada met at the 1972 World Championship to determine who was the best country in hockey sports.

The coin depicts two hockey players with sticks in their hands. On the outer ring, the initials of the coaches and the numbers of the players jerseys surround the inner core.

The central drawing by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel depicts two hockey players representing Team Canada at the 1972 Canada-USSR Summit series. Against the backdrop of the legendary maple leaf, the hockey team jersey is accompanied by the words "The Series/La Série" and "50 Years/Ans". The coaches' initials and jersey numbers surround the inside, embodying the spirit of Team Canada. The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Suzanne Blunt.

USSR Super Series - Canada 1972 - hockey series of 8 games between the national teams of the Soviet Union and Canada. Before the start of the 1972-73 season, for the first time in the history of hockey, a series of matches was organized between the best professionals in Canada and the Soviet Union. The first four games were held in Canada, the rest in Moscow.

The USSR team won a landslide victory in the first match. Playing at high speeds and showing a combinational style, the Soviet Union team also won the fourth meeting and took the lead after the Canadian half of the series, +2=1-1.

In Moscow, in the presence of the country's leaders, the USSR national team won the fifth match, and victory in the series was practically in the hands of Soviet hockey players. But the Canadians fought to the end in every match and eventually managed to turn the tide and win in the last three matches. In the eighth match, the USSR national team led after the first two periods 5:3, but the result was 6:5 in favor of the North Americans - the decisive goal 34 seconds before the final siren was scored by Paul Henderson.

Even after 50 years, this hockey game still resonates in the hearts and minds of those who witnessed this glorious chapter in the history of the sport.

The Summit Series has become an important event not only as a sporting triumph for Canada, but also as an incentive for the reunification of the country. After the FLQ crisis and a strong secessionist movement in Quebec, the 1972 summit series provided an opportunity for both English and French Canadians to cheer on the same side and share national pride in a historic triumph.
