Description: This print appears to be a later impression published as an addition to 'M. Auer's polig. Illustr. Zeitschrift 'Faust', c. 1850. Originally published 1818.
Artists and Engravers: Made by 'P. Fendi' after 'Ph. Wouwerman'. Peter Fendi (1796 Vienna - 1842 Vienna) belongs to the most significant names in the Austrian art history of the 19th century. At the age of 14 he began studying at the Vienna Academy among his teachers Fischer, Maurer and Lampi. For years he worked as a copyist for the Royal Imperial Numismatic and Antiques Cabinet (now the Museum of Fine Arts) at the same time being active as a free-lance artist. A trip to Venice in 1821 had an important impact on his artistic development marking his transition from a graphic artist to painter. In the 1830s his genre and portrait paintings brought him popularity in Vienna as well as abroad. Many of his works became property of the Austrian imperial house and noble collections. Along with Danhauser and Waldmueller he is considered a main representative of the old Viennese genre painting. Contemporary critics called him "painting Schubert" (comparing him with famous Viennese composer Franz Schubert). Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) was a Dutch painter of landscapes, hunting and battle scenes.

Condition: Very good, given age. Stains in the margins, and some faint stains in the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
