The Law were an English rock group formed in 1991 by singer Paul Rodgers (ex-Free, Bad Company and The Firm) and drummer Kenney Jones (ex-Small Faces/Faces and The Who). They intended to use different supporting musicians, to allow Rodgers to pursue whatever style he wished. They assembled a core band of studio musicians, consisting of Jim Barber (whose credits include The Rolling Stones, Ruby Turner and Mick Jagger's solo album Primitive Cool) as the main guitarist, second guitarist John Staehely (ex-Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne) and bassist Pino Palladino (formerly of Paul Young's and Jools Holland's bands), with guest spots by guitarists such as David Gilmour, Bryan Adams and Chris Rea.
The band produced the Billboard #1 AOR Chart hit "Laying Down the Law", written by Rodgers, but the group's only album peaked at a disappointing #126 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart. An album of outtakes from the first album[citation needed] has been released as a bootleg, often referred to as The Law II.
The Law – joined by John Young on keyboards – played just one show: at Milton Keynes Bowl, supporting ZZ Top and Bryan Adams. "That was completely barmy," reflected Rodgers. "Kenney and I… couldn't wait to get on the road, but it never happened. I sat waiting for the phone to ring. We even had to twist arms just to get that show – much to the chagrin of some of the other bands that day."[1]
The Law derived its name, and the title of its only single, "Laying Down the Law", from the 1970s American band Law, which recorded two albums on MCA Records. When that band opened for Bad Company at the Cleveland Agora circa 1975, Paul Rogers told Law's guitar player, "I like the name of your band." Some twenty years later, he borrowed it.[citation needed]

These songs are left-overs from the released album sessions. Notably, both "Wanna Make Love to You" and "Alibi" were previously recorded by Eric Clapton (as "I Wanna Make Love to You", a 1986 B-side (released in 1988 on Crossroads, and "No Alibis", on his Journeyman album, respectively). Also, Too Much Is Not Enough was previously recorded by Joe Lynn Turner in the mid-eighties for the unreleased follow-up of Rescue You and he recorded it again with Deep Purple on their Slaves and Masters album. In 1998 he recorded it again on his solo album Hurry Up and Wait. The original version can be found on the Demos '88 - 91' bootleg.
The Law was a short-lived, not-quite-realized AOR supergroup centered around vocalist Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, the Firm) and drummer Kenney Jones (the Small Faces, the Faces, latter-day Who). The two teamed up with the idea of using different supporting musicians, in order to allow Rodgers to pursue whatever musical style he felt like. They assembled a core band of studio musicians, including guitarist John Staehely and bassist Pino Palladino, and landed guest spots from guitarists like David Gilmour, Bryan Adams, and Chris Rea. Tired of being a primary source of material (as he usually had been in the past), Rodgers also decided to rely chiefly on outside contributions (from the likes of Adams, Rea, Def Leppard's Phil Collen, and Benny Mardones, among others). The group never really jelled, and the sole Law album -- a self-titled effort released in 1991 -- was not all that popular. Ironically, its sole hit -- the rock-radio chart-topper "Laying Down the Law" -- was penned by Rodgers; the album also contained the first recording of Collen's "Miss You in a Heartbeat," later a hit for Def Leppard. Faced with generally disappointing results, however, Rodgers and Jones laid the Law to rest.
Vocalist Paul Rodgers had a strong track record with supergroups like Bad Company and the Firm, but he missed the mark with the Law. Rodgers and former Small Faces, Faces, and the Who drummer Kenney Jones formed a duo named the Law and released one album on Atlantic in 1991. In case any listener didn't recognize the stature of Rodgers and Jones, the liner notes trace their pedigrees. The Law was a hollow, ill-conceived attempt at commercial success, backed by powerful industry figures like Atlantic chief Ahmet Ertegun (listed as a co-producer), ZZ Top manager Bill Ham, and producer Chris Kimsey. But a duo with a singer and drummer? Rodgers and Jones had to utilize session musicians and a few ringers like Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Chris Rea, and Bryan Adams. Hired guns, including Rea, Adams, Benny Mardones, and Def Leppard's Phil Collen, contributed seven of the 11 songs while Rodgers penned the other three. Considering the gritty, soulful past work of Rodgers and Jones, the slickness of The Law is a shock. Without question, the best song is Rodgers' lethal "Laying Down the Law," a smoldering, meaty slab of bluesy rock crackling with his amazing voice. This is the only song that comes close to matching the fire and intensity of Free and Bad Company. A few other songs, like the atmospheric "Stone," featuring both Rea and Gilmour and the boisterous "For a Little Ride," radiate a bit of sparkle. As performed by the Law, Collen's "Miss You in a Heartbeat" is bland, but Def Leppard had a big hit with it a few years later. It should be no surprise that the artistic and commercial failure of The Law rendered the "band" a one-off project. It could have worked had it formed and evolved naturally.

Queen + Paul Rodgers
Paul Bernard Rodgers (born 17 December 1949)[1] is an English singer, songwriter and musician. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was vocalist of Free and Bad Company. After stints in two less successful bands in the 1980s and early 1990s, The Firm and The Law, he became a solo artist.[2] He has more recently toured and recorded with Queen. Rodgers has been dubbed "The Voice" by his fans due to his powerful and bluesy voice.[3] A poll in Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 55 on its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time".[4] In 2011 Rodgers received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.[5]
Rodgers has been cited as a significant influence on a number of notable rock singers.[citation needed] In 1991, John Mellencamp called Rodgers "the best rock singer ever".[6] Freddie Mercury, the original Queen vocalist, in particular liked Rodgers and his aggressive style.[4]
Early career
Paul Bernard Rodgers was born in Middlesbrough, England. He played bass[7] for a band named The Roadrunners. Colin Bradley originally had the lead vocal slot, but convinced Paul to sing and front the band as Colin was primarily interested in playing rhythm guitar and his oldest brother Joe, (who managed the band) supported the idea.Just before leaving Middlesbrough for the London music scene, the band changed its name to The Wildflowers. Other members of this band were Micky Moody (later of Whitesnake) and Bruce Thomas (later of Elvis Costello and The Attractions).
Free (band)
Rodgers joined British music scene in 1968 as singer/songwriter for bluesy rockers Free. In 1970, they shot up the international radio charts with "All Right Now", which Rodgers wrote with the group's bassist Andy Fraser.[8] It was a number one hit in more than 20 territories and acknowledged by ASCAP in 1990 for having received over a million radio plays in the US.
For a short time, Free were alongside Led Zeppelin as among the highest grossing British acts, though Free's status did not sustain. Free released four albums with a combination of blues, ballads and rock that were Top Five successes in the UK. When in 2000, the song "All Right Now" achieved the mark of two million radio plays in the UK, an award was given to Rodgers as one of the two writers.
After the first break-up of Free in the spring of 1971, Rodgers briefly formed a three-piece band called Peace. Alongside bassist Stewart McDonald and drummer Mick Underwood, Rodgers played guitar and sang lead vocal. Peace supported Mott the Hoople's UK tour in 1971, but broke up when Free reformed at the start of 1972. Two songs by Peace were eventually included on the fifth disc of the 2000 Free compilation Songs of Yesterday, along with a song that Rodgers recorded with the Maytals. A bootleg has circulated of a 22 December 1971 appearance by Peace on the BBC's Top Gear program.[9]
1970s: Bad Company
Rodgers formed his next band, Bad Company, with Mick Ralphs, former guitarist of Mott the Hoople. The lineup also included Rodgers' bandmate from Free, drummer Simon Kirke, and Boz Burrell, former vocalist and bassist of King Crimson. Rodgers said he and Ralphs were still trying to come up with a name for the band, "and I just said 'Bad Company', and there was this scuffling noise and he said, 'Shit, I dropped the phone—that's it!'"[10]
Bad Company was the first act signed to Led Zeppelin's new record label, Swan Song. They toured from 1973 to 1982, and had several hits such as "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Can't Get Enough", "Shooting Star", "Bad Company", and "Run with the Pack". Rodgers played instruments on several tracks: "Bad Company" and "Run With The Pack" featured him on piano; "Rock and Roll Fantasy" on guitar; and on the ballad "Seagull" Rodgers played all of the instruments. Bad Company earned six platinum albums until Rodgers left in 1982, stating that he wanted to spend time with his young family.
It was revealed in April 2011 that after Jim Morrison's death in 1971, the rest of The Doors wanted Rodgers to replace him. Robbie Krieger flew to England to personally offer him the job. However, Rodgers has said that he was off the grid in a very rural area at the time, and the moment passed.[11][12] In late 1973, Rodgers was asked to become the singer of Deep Purple when Ian Gillan had left the band. He rejected their offer in order to start Bad Company.
1980s: Solo career and The Firm
In October 1983, Rodgers released his first solo LP Cut Loose. He composed all of the music and played all of the instruments. The album reached number 135 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart.[13]
When his friend Jimmy Page started to come around to his house, guitar in hand and Led Zeppelin at an end, the duo's first live pairing was on the US ARMS (Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis) Tour, which had first been mooted by Eric Clapton and, besides Rodgers and Page, would include Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood and others. The inspiration behind ARMS had been former Small Faces/Faces member Ronnie Lane's own struggle with M.S. This led to Rodgers and Page's further teaming in the group The Firm, which resulted in two albums and two tours. Despite being panned by critics,[citation needed] The Firm's two albums, The Firm and Mean Business, achieved moderate sales success[14] and produced the radio hits "Radioactive", "Satisfaction Guaranteed", and, in the UK, "All The King's Horses".
During this same period, a series of albums were produced called Willie and the Poor Boys.[15] Rodgers and Page were briefly part of this and recorded "These Arms of Mine", an Otis Redding tune. This recording also became a video promoting the CD.
1990s: The Law and solo career
The Law, Rodgers' 1991 musical venture with former The Who and Faces drummer Kenney Jones, produced Billboard's number one AOR chart hit "Laying Down the Law" written by Rodgers, but the album peaked at number 126 on the Billboard 200 chart. A second album can be found on the bootleg market, which is often referred to as The Law II. It is believed that this collection of songs were leftovers from the first album.[16]
Rodgers acknowledged the influence of Jimi Hendrix by collaborating with Steve Vai, Hendrix's Band of Gypsys (Buddy Miles and Billy Cox) and the London Metropolitan Orchestra and recorded the track "Bold As Love", on the Hendrix tribute album In From The Storm. Then Rodgers teamed with Journey guitarist Neal Schon and released The Hendrix Set, a live 5-track CD, recorded in 1993 with Rodgers' interpretations of Hendrix songs. A Canadian and US tour followed.
His Grammy-nominated solo CD, Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters was released in 1993. Rodgers wrote the title track and was backed by guitarists Brian May, Gary Moore, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, Buddy Guy, Richie Sambora, Brian Setzer, Slash, Neal Schon and Trevor Rabin.
For Woodstock's 25th anniversary in 1994, Rodgers pulled together drummer Jason Bonham, bassist Andy Fraser (from Free), guitarists Slash and Schon at the last moment to perform as the Paul Rodgers Rock and Blues Revue.
In 1995 he formed a new band consisting of Jaz Lochrie on bass, Jimmy Copley on drums and Geoff Whitehorn on guitar. The band (The Paul Rodgers Band) toured extensively in Europe, US and in the UK until 1998 and released three albums – Now, Now and Live and Electric. Now charted internationally in the Top 40. The single "Soul of Love" remained in rotation on more than 86 US radio stations for six months but was not a sales success. In 1996, he went to Australia and decided to play congas for The Wiggles' Wake Up Jeff! album.[17] His 1997 world tour included Russia, Japan, Canada, US, UK, Germany, France, Romania, Bulgaria, Israel, Brazil, Greece and Argentina.
Rodgers and Bad Company hit Billboard's US BDS charts with the number one single "Hey, Hey" in 1999, one of four new tracks off Bad Company's The 'Original' Bad Co. Anthology. The second single release, Rodgers's "Hammer of Love", reached number two. For the first time in 20 years, all the original members of Bad Company toured the US.[18]
2000s: Solo career, Queen and Bad Company reunion
Rodgers focused on his solo career in 2000 and released Electric, his sixth solo CD. In its debut week, the single "Drifters" was US rock radio's number one on the Most Added FMQB Hot Trax list, number two on Most Added R&R Rock and number three on Most Added Album Net Power Cuts. "Drifters" remained in the top 10 for eight weeks on Billboard's Rock charts. That year, he played sold-out concerts in England, Scotland, Australia, United States and Canada. After his appearance on TV's Late Show with David Letterman in New York, he met and jammed with B.B. King. That same year, Rodgers, Jimmie Vaughan, Levon Helm, bluesmen Hubert Sumlin, Johnnie Johnson, James Cotton and others performed a sold out concert in Cleveland as a Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters.
In spring 2001, Rodgers returned to Australia, England and Scotland for the second run of sold-out shows. That summer he toured the US with Bad Company.
Rodgers and Bad Company released their first official live CD and DVD, In Concert: Merchants of Cool, in 2002. It included all the hits and a new single, "Joe Fabulous", penned by Rodgers, which hit number one at Classic Rock Radio and Top 20 on mainstream rock radio in the US. In its debut week, the DVD sales sound scanned at number three Canada, and number four in the US. The Joe Fabulous Tour kicked off in the US and sold out in the UK. While in London, Rodgers performed with Jeff Beck at the Royal Festival Hall. Rodgers was invited by long-time fan Tony Blair to perform at the Labour Party Conference. "I had the entire Labour Party singing the chorus of "Wishing Well", a song I wrote and shared with Free, ...'love in a peaceful world'. 'Love in a peaceful world'... over and over and over hoping the words would sink in but we went to war" recalled Rodgers. Twice in 2002, Rodgers performed on Britain's TV show Top of the Pops 2.
In 2003, Rodgers toured as a solo artist for the first time in two years playing 25 US dates. In his solo band were guitarist Howard Leese (formerly of Heart), bassist Lynn Sorensen and drummer Jeff Kathan. Jools Holland invited Rodgers to record "I Told The Truth" for Holland's album Small World Big Band. The CD also featured Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Peter Gabriel, Michael McDonald, Ringo Starr and others. This led to Rodgers performing two sold-out nights at London's Royal Albert Hall with Holland and his 18-piece rhythm and blues orchestra, and several UK TV appearances. He also appeared with Jeff Beck, performing some songs from Beck's back catalogue (along with several other notable musicians, including John Mclaughlin, Roger Waters and the White Stripes) for part of a week-long series of charity concerts put on by Jeff Beck at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Early in 2004, Rodgers joined Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox (Hendrix's Cry of Love), Buddy Guy, Joe Satriani, Kid Rock's Kenny Olson, Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell, Double Trouble, Indigenous, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and blues legend Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters) and performed three sold-out shows in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco as "Experience Hendrix". Once again, Rodgers only played 25 concerts in the US and Canada. He performed at Wembley for the fiftieth anniversary celebration for the Fender Stratocaster, along with David Gilmour who played Strat No. 001, Ronnie Wood, Brian May, Joe Walsh, Gary Moore, Rodgers sang and played a custom designed Jaguar Fender Strat. Rodgers was invited by The Four Tops to be part of their fiftieth anniversary TV/DVD concert celebration at Motown's Opera House and performed alongside Aretha Franklin, Dennis Edwards & The Temptations Revue, Sam Moore, Mary Wilson, Ashford and Simpson and The Four Tops.
In late 2004, after a successful live television performance, two of the four members of the British rock group Queen proposed a collaboration with Rodgers, in which he would sing lead vocals on a European tour. Rodgers thus joined Brian May and Roger Taylor (former bassist John Deacon retired in the late 1990s), with the group billed as Queen + Paul Rodgers and they subsequently toured worldwide in 2005 and 2006. The participants clearly stated, including on Brian May's own website, "that Rodgers would be "featured with" Queen as: "Queen + Paul Rodgers", not replacing the late Freddie Mercury". The group subsequently released a live album with songs from Queen, Bad Company and Free, called Return of the Champions, and a DVD of the same name. Both featured live recordings from their Sheffield Hallam FM Arena concert on 9 May 2005. The DVD features "Imagine" from Hyde Park. "For one glorious summer" opined music critic Sean Michaels "we were all Paul Rodgers".[19] Another DVD was released in 2006 from a live performance in Japan, called Super Live in Japan.
Queen + Paul Rodgers also released a single featuring "Reaching Out", "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Fat Bottomed Girls".
The summer of 2006 saw Rodgers again focused on his solo career with a world tour, which commenced in Austin, Texas, US in June, then on to Japan, finishing in Glasgow, Scotland, in October 2006.
On 15 August 2006, Brian May confirmed through his website that "Queen + Paul Rodgers" would begin producing a new studio album beginning in October, to be recorded at Roger Taylor's home.[20]
In April 2007 Rodgers released a live album of his 2006 tour, Live in Glasgow, recorded in Glasgow, Scotland 13 October 2006, with a DVD of the same show released the following month.
On 27–28 December 2007, Rodgers performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra during their Winter 2007 Tour in Houston, Texas and Dallas, Texas. Unannounced, he joined the band at the end of their show to sing "Bad Company" and "All Right Now".
Rogers was a judge for the sixth and seventh annual Independent Music Awards to support independent artists.[21]
On 27 June 2008, Rodgers and Queen performed at the Concert for Nelson Mandela to celebrate Mandela's 90th birthday.
On 8 August 2008, Rodgers and original members Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke reunited as Bad Company to perform a one-night only, sold-out performance at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. The live performance was released on Blu-ray, DVD, and CD on 9 February 2010 and the tracks included seventeen Bad Company hits. Rodgers dedicated "Gone, Gone, Gone" to original bassist Boz Burrell, who died in 2006.
On 14 May 2009, Rodgers announced he was ending his five-year-long collaboration with Queen, although did not rule out the possibility of working with them again. On 17 November 2009, it was announced he would join the other surviving members of Bad Company for an eight date UK tour in April 2010.
2010s: Solo career and more Bad Company
On 5 June 2010 he began a mini-California tour by performing at the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival. One week later, on 12 June, Rodgers and his band appeared as headliners on the Grandstand Stage at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, California, followed by casino shows in Lemoore on 17 June and in Santa Ynez on 18 June.
Rodgers performed a solo UK tour in April 2011 with Joe Elliot's Down 'n' Outz. The concert of 28 April at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena was filmed for a future live DVD release.
In May 2011 Rodgers received an Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding contribution to British music" [22][23]
Rodgers announced that he would be taking part in a Paul McCartney tribute album that would also feature contributions by Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, BB King, and KISS.[24] Originally planned for a late 2010 release, the album, entitled The Art of McCartney, was released in late 2014. Rodgers' contribution is a cover of the Wings song "Let Me Roll It", originally from their 1973 album Band on the Run.
In 2014, Rodgers was once again touring with Bad Company.[25]
In 2017 Paul Rodgers embarked on a 'Free Spirit' UK Tour in May 2017 to celebrate the music of Free by performing songs strictly from the Free catalogue. Rodgers said “It was 50 years ago in 1967 when Paul Kossoff and I met and later formed Free". In 2018 a CD/DVD set was released which captured the final show from the ‘Free Spirit’ tour filmed at the Royal Albert Hall on 28 May 2017.
Personal life
Paul Rodgers married Machiko Shimizu in 1971, and has two children from that marriage, Steve and Jasmine. The two children are also musicians and singers who formed a band, Bôa, in the 1990s. Paul Rodgers also has another child from a previous relationship who resides in his hometown of Middlesbrough, England. Rodgers and Shimizu divorced in 1996.[citation needed]
On 26 September 2007, Rodgers married a former model and Miss Canada, exercise physiologist and artist Cynthia Kereluk in Canada's Okanagan Valley.[27]
Rodgers became a Canadian citizen on 21 October 2011 and resides in Surrey, British Columbia.[28][29]

In a career that spans many decades, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Rodgers and his various groups have sold in excess of 125 million records around the world. Best known for his expressive vocals on songs that have become rock & roll staples, like "All Right Now," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Can't Get Enough," and "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy," Rodgers has been cited by dozens of 1970s and '80s rock groups and musicians as a major influence. U.S. groups like the Black Crowes and Guns N' Roses have cited Rodgers and his various groups -- Free, Bad Company, the Firm, the Law -- as an influence on their styles. As a vocalist and songwriter, Rodgers had great admiration and respect for the classic African-American blues and R&B vocalists. Rodgers credits his father for buying him a guitar in his youth, but he later taught himself bass and piano as well. He began writing songs when he was in his early teens, before he had mastered any instrument.
Rodgers began playing out in clubs around Middlesborough, in northern England, when he was 13, taking singers like Rod Stewart as his role models. Right after he left school, he set out for London in a van with a band called the Roadrunners. The van broke down en route, and while the other members hitchhiked back north, Rodgers went south to London. After a short time he returned home to his parents, who were supportive of his musical endeavors. But having seen the club scene in London, he became determined to go back and make his mark there.
Returning to London, he formed the blues band Brown Sugar, deciding to see how far he could go as a vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist. In the mid- and late '60s, London was in the midst of a huge blues revival, and Rodgers had the opportunity to see Muddy Waters and dozens of other American blues musicians perform at London's Marquee Club and other blues and R&B venues. Seeing Waters live had a lasting effect on Rodgers, and his early experiments, Brown Sugar and Free, started out as blues bands.
Rodgers was working with Brown Sugar when guitarist Paul Kossoff heard him sing. Kossoff was so impressed with Rodgers' voice that the two decided to create a new band, joined by Simon Kirke on drums and bassist Andy Fraser. After seeing them at the Nags Head Pub in Battersea, Britain's godfather of blues, Alexis Korner, suggested they call themselves Free. A song Rodgers co-wrote with Fraser, "All Right Now," hit number one in 20 territories around the world in 1970. The song remains a rock staple, having been entered into ASCAP's "One Million" airplay singles club. By the early '70s, Free was one of the biggest-selling British blues-rock groups; by the time the band dissolved in 1973, they had achieved an uncanny level of superstar success: they had sold more than 20 million albums around the world and had played more than 700 arena and festival concerts.
In 1973, Rodgers formed Bad Company, then a prototype "supergroup," with King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and Free drummer Simon Kirke. But this time, Rodgers learned from the mistakes he'd made with Free; he was determined to have bandmates who shared his musical vision -- the overnight success that Free experienced put undue pressures on the personalities in the band. Rodgers contacted Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin's notorious manager, who was fortuitously starting Swan Song Records, the group's vanity label. By the close of the 1970s, Bad Company had recorded six multi-platinum albums, which spurred classic blues-rock and rock staples like "Can't Get Enough," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Shooting Star," and "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy." By the time Bad Company called it quits, they had played to over ten million people around the world and sold 30 million albums.
Other highlights of Rodgers' career include a showstopping version of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" at Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary party at Madison Square Garden in 1988, and his formation of a new group with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, the Firm, in the mid-'80s. Following that band's two albums, Rodgers formed the Law with former Small Faces/Who drummer Kenny Jones.
Cut Loose
Since the early '80s, Rodgers has also released a number of solo albums. They include Cut Loose (1983) and The Morning After the Night Before/Northwind (1984), both for Atlantic Records. His 1990s output includes Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters (1993, Victory Records) and The Hendrix Set, a mini-CD released that same year. Muddy Water Blues was nominated for a Grammy and features guest performances by Slash, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, Buddy Guy, and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. Rodgers then put together a backing band featuring guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, bassist Jaz Lochrie, and drummer Jim Copley, recording Paul Rodgers Live (1996) and Paul Rodgers Now (1997) for the New York-based Velvel Records.
After a Bad Company reunion in 1999, Rodgers switched over to CMC International, issuing the album Electric in 2000. Taking a break from his solo career in the middle of the decade, Rodgers joined Brian May and Roger Taylor in a version of Queen for some live shows, one of which was documented on 2005's Return of the Champions, a double disc on the Hollywood label. In 2007 Eagle Rock Entertainment released a new solo album, Live in Glasgow, taken from a October 13, 2006, concert at Clyde Auditorium in Scotland. Released on both CD and DVD, it highlighted both Bad Company and Free material, some of which Rodgers hadn't performed in 35 years.
The Royal Sessions
Rodgers continued to perform live with Queen through the end of 2009. Not long afterward, he reunited with Bad Company for a 2010 tour that was documented on two separate live releases. After this, Rodgers turned to his solo career, releasing a collection of classic soul covers called The Royal Sessions early in 2014.

Kenneth Thomas Jones (born 16 September 1948) is an English drummer best known for his work in the groups Small Faces, Faces, and the Who. Jones was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Small Faces/Faces.[1]
Biography
Small Faces to the Faces
Having previously been in a band with Ronnie Lane, Jones was one of the founding members of the English rock group, the Small Faces. Active from 1965 to 1969, Small Faces were part of the Mod revolution of the 1960s. Their hits included "All or Nothing", "Sha-La-La-La-Lee", "Itchycoo Park" and "Tin Soldier". Small Faces have been cited as a major influence on musicians for the past 35 years, including Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher.[2]
In 2007, the Small Faces were honoured by Westminster Council with a commemorative plaque placed at what was Don Arden's offices in Carnaby Street, the band's "spiritual home". Jones himself unveiled the plaque. In a BBC interview, Jones said: "To honour the Small Faces after all these years is a terrific achievement. I only wish that Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane and Don Arden were here to enjoy this moment with me".[3] Since the death of Ian McLagan in December 2014, Jones is the sole surviving member of the Small Faces.
In 2004 The Observer listed the Small Faces' 1968 release Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake one of the "top British albums of all time".[4]
After the departure of lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott in 1969, the group recruited singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood to replace Marriott. Both were formerly from the Jeff Beck Group. The band changed its name to the Faces, as the original name was associated with the small stature of its members, and Stewart and Wood did not fit the description. Jones remained with the band until its dissolution in late 1975, recording four studio albums and a live album with them.[5]
The Who
In November 1978, Jones was invited by guitarist Pete Townshend and manager Bill Curbishley to join The Who, replacing their original drummer Keith Moon, who had died on 7 September 1978 of a Heminevrin overdose at the age of 32.[6] He was invited, in part, because the band had been friendly with him from his days with the Small Faces (he and Moon were friends and were together on the last night of Moon's life in 1978, as part of the viewing party put together by Paul McCartney, for The Buddy Holly Story), and because he had played with Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle on the Tommy soundtrack. At his audition, he sought advice from Jon Astley how he should play his drums; Astley advised Jones to play in his manner more than Moon's.[7] He played on the albums Face Dances and It's Hard and also played on the soundtrack for Daltrey's film McVicar, as well as on the band's tours from 1979 to 1982. Jones played with the band at Live Aid in 1985. Jones' final appearance as a regular member of the Who was when the group received a lifetime achievement award at the 1988 British Phonographic Industry awards ceremony. He was frequently at odds with Daltrey, who felt that Jones' drumming style was not right for the band (Jones's playing was usually straighter and less frenetic than Moon's), but Daltrey has denied having anything personal against Jones or his drumming.[8] Jones was replaced by Simon Phillips for the Who's 1989 reunion tour. In an April 2011 special edition of Uncut magazine,[citation needed] Townshend said that Jones was a good choice for the band.
Kenney Jones reunited with The Who on 14 June 2014 at the Rock n Horsepower benefit concert held at his Hurtwood Polo Club. The band performed for an event set up by Jones to benefit Prostate Cancer UK, an organization that promotes awareness of the disease that Jones has. It was the first time that he had appeared onstage with Townshend and Daltrey since 1988. Sharing the bill were contemporaries such as Jeff Beck, Procol Harum and Mike Rutherford.[9]
The Law
Jones formed partnerships with former Free, Bad Company, and The Firm singer Paul Rodgers in the early 1990s, forming a band called The Law.
The Jones Gang
In 2001, Jones formed a new band; over several months, the line-up solidified to include Rick Wills and Robert Hart. In 2005, The Jones Gang released their debut album, Any Day Now.
Guest appearances
Jones has been featured on recordings as a guest drummer on many recording sessions, which included appearances on albums by musicians Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Ronnie Wood, Roger Daltrey, Andy Fairweather-Low,[10] Joan Armatrading, Keith Moon, Marsha Hunt, Mike Batt, Pete Townshend, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, David Essex, John Lodge and Wings, He was also on a Top of the Pops performance with Status Quo, performing their 1986 hit single, "Red Sky".
Outside music
Outside of music, Jones is a passionate fan of polo. He has become an accomplished polo player and is the owner of Hurtwood Park Polo Club, in Ewhurst, Surrey.[11]
On behalf of Small Faces and in memory of his late colleagues Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, Jones established a children's charity, the Small Faces Charitable Trust, in 1999.[12]
Jones is a supporter of the Conservative Party,[13] and recorded a song called "Mr Brown" written by Robert Hart, criticising the tax policies of the then Chancellor of Exchequer Gordon Brown.[14] He has also performed in support of the Countryside Alliance, an organisation which promotes rural issues such as fox hunting.[15]
Jones' personal memoir, Let the Good Times Role: My Life in Small Faces, Faces, and The Who, will release in September 2018 (ISBN 9781250193568).
Personal life
Jones has six children. He is married to the former model Jayne Andrew, the mother of four of his children.
Jones was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2013,[16] but he has since overcome the disease with brachytherapy.
Drummer Kenney Jones has been a member of two of England's most beloved and influential rock bands -- the Faces and the Who (although the latter he was a member of only briefly, and well after their prime). Born September 16, 1948 and raised in the East End of London, England, Jones took up the drums at the age of 13, as he and some friends formed a skiffle group. Learning quickly from playing along to recordings by Booker T. & the MG's and the Shadows, Jones became a session drummer by the age of 15. By the mid-'60s, he was a member of a local group called "the Pioneers", which eventually transformed into the Small Faces (featuring guitarist/singer Steve Marriott, bassist Ronnie Lane, and keyboardist Ian McLagen). The lineup issued a total of four albums (1967's self-titled debut, plus a pair in 1968, There Are But Four Small Faces and Ogden's Nut Gone Flake), before Marriott split from the group to form Humble Pie.
First Step
Instead of calling it a day, the Small Faces shortened their name to the Faces, and welcomed in new members Rod Stewart (vocals) and Ron Wood (guitar), who had both just recently exited the Jeff Beck Group. It was this line-up that is probably the best-known, as the quintet's raucous, drunken party anthems would serve as a blueprint for a variety of future rock groups (especially such early punk outfits as the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols). The Faces managed a total of five releases (1970's First Step, 1971's Long Player and A Nod Is as Good as a Wink, 1973's Oh La La, and 1974's Coast to Coast), before Stewart left to focus full-time on an already successful solo career, and Wood joined up with the Rolling Stones in 1975. During the late '70s, Jones guested on other artist's recordings (including Joan Armatrading and Andy Fairweather-Low, among others), and even played on a pair of albums by a reunited Small Faces (1977's Playmates and 1978's 78 in the Shade). Shortly thereafter, the death of one of rock's all-time greats would lead to Jones' next full-time gig.
Face Dances
When longtime Who drummer Keith Moon died suddenly in September of 1978 after an accidental drug overdose, the group's future was suddenly uncertain (in a strange twist of fate, both Moon and Jones were at the same party and photographed together the night before Moon's passing). A few months later, the group issued a statement that they would carry on, with Jones as their new drummer (he and Who leader/guitarist Pete Townshend were supposedly longtime drinking buddies). Jones kept the backbeat on several successful tours during the late '70s/early '80s (as well as such spotty albums as 1981's Face Dances and 1982's It's Hard), before the band announced that their 1982 tour would be their last. A few years later, the latter-day Who lineup would reunite from time to time for special occasions, including brief sets at 1985's Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, and in 1988 at the Royal Albert Hall for the British Phonographic Industry awards ceremony. But when the Who launched their first full reunion tour in 1989, Jones was ousted in favor of sessionman Simon Phillips. In the early '90s, Jones briefly returned as a member of the group the Law (which featured former Free/Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers), but shortly after a lone, self-titled debut appeared in 1991, the band split up as well. Jones has subsequently appeared sporadically on recordings by other artists, but has kept a much lower profile.

Kenney Jones: Filling Keith Moon’s Shoes
Kenney Jones is tired of talking about Keith Moon. “He never did me any favors,” the former drummer for The Who, The Small Faces, and The Faces jokes, with only a hint of regret. His position is quite understandable, after Roger Daltrey called Kenney’s drumming “simplistic and stifling” in the July 1989 issue of Musician magazine.
From the moment that Kenney Jones was asked to become a full-fledged member of the Who following Moon’s death, he had to suffer unfair comparisons to the Who’s original drummer. As is now well known, tensions within the band led to Kenney’s eventual falling out with his former band members. But, he explains, his relationship with the Who hadn’t always been so strained:
“It wasn’t as socially difficult as people thought when I joined the band, because they were all good friends of mine. Over the years we had toured together when I was in The Small Faces. I’d also done some sessions for The Who privately, like the Quadrophenia film soundtrack.

“After Keith died, they didn’t want anyone to replace him because he was irreplaceable. He had his own style of drumming, which nobody could mimic, because he played thousands of mistakes that sounded great. But I’m more of straightforward, solid drummer. When I do a fill it’s noticeable, rather than being a permanent drum solo. So I thought that the best thing I could do was to play the way I play. That’s being honest.
“I tried to take the best of Keith Moon – all his great fills, which you have to do in certain songs – and use them selectively. But the style would finally be me. And that’s all I could do, I couldn’t do no more.
“But as far as Roger was concerned, I think he desperately missed the frantic, nutty playing of Keith. And he also missed his dynamic personality, because onstage Moon spoke to the audience and was a real personality. I couldn’t give anybody that, because I’m not that kind of person. I’m just me.
“It was two years after I joined the band that we started to make an album. Pete was writing material that was kind of weird – it wasn’t good enough for a Who album. We ended up sounding like The Who go Eagles. My drums were flat-sounding – typical Eagles drum sound. I tend to feel that everyone points the finger at me because the two albums we made [Face Dances, and It’s Hard] were not that great.
“Keith was a unique drummer. I especially liked him in the early ’60s when he was playing ’Can’t Explain ’ and that sort of stuff. He was playing a lot simpler and tighter on a smaller kit. When he got more and more outrageous, each time you’d see him he’d have more drums around his kit. That’s when he changed his style, really, from being simpler to just trying to justify his huge setup by bashing as many drums as possible. But I thought he was a great drummer and a great character. He was a very good friend of mine. I actually miss him and feel it’s sad that he’s no longer with The Who. The whole thing’s a bloody tragedy.”
