Hard-to-Find “Cuba” by Irene A. Wright.  Illustrated with 73 Black & White Photos and Map.  Published by MacMillan and Company – First Edition, 1910 (on both the Title & Copyright Pages).  512 Pages including its Index and several Pages of Advertising of other MacMillan books available for sale (with pricing).

Gift Inscription on the front half Title Page “Presented to Akin Hall  Library by Harriet H(amilton) Ogden (1855-1950), October, 1913”.  Her parents were William Hamilton Ogden & Anna Akin Ogden.  Ogden and, of course, Akin were one of the early, influential families in the Pawling, NY area.

Though this Book is technically “Ex Library”, Akin Free Library is not a Library in the conventional sense as its shelves are filled with Books and Documents acquired by the donations of the many wealthy patrons of the area (vs actively purchasing Books with an eye towards mass appeal).

Akins is located in Pawling, NY and is now a Museum and Philanthropic Institute with its Books available for on-premise only enjoyment and research.  This Book came from back in the mid-20th century days when it was still a lending Library.

Though I do not know if the following well-known Pawling residents personally donated to Akin, these celebrities certainly rubbed elbows with those that did: Norman Vincent Peale, James Earl Jones, Edward R. Murrow, Lowell Thomas, Thomas E. Dewey, Sally Jesse Raphael and Beverly Sills (Patterson, NY).

The Book is in very good condition.  Pages are clean and without tears though there is some light foxing on some of the Pages adjacent to the Photos.

Also, some Library coding on the Page adjacent the Copyright Page and a Cardholder and Date Due Slip on the front endpapers.  Binding is tight.

The Green Cloth Boards view very nicely – very clean and with little wear.  The Black and Gold Decorations still quite bright and crisp and the sheet pattern of embossed Pineapples on the Front Board is wonderful.  There is a Dewey Decimal coding along the Spine penned in black.
