【Artist and Title】
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (March 17, 1839 (April 30, 1839) - June 9, 1892 (Meiji 25)) was an ukiyo-e artist active from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji era. Kyosai KAWANABE, Yoshiiku OCHIAI, and Yoshifuji UTAGAWA all studied under Kuniyoshi UTAGAWA and were in a relationship of brothers and apprentices, and Yoshiiku OCHIAI in particular was a worthy rival who even competed. In addition, many ukiyo-e artists, Japanese-style painters, and other painters are named after Yoshitoshi's pupils or in his painting line, and are called ukiyo-e artists again.

【Title】
たのしみは夕顔だなの ゆふ涼 男はててら 女はふたのして
Pleasure is this lie cool under the moon flower bower,
the man in his undershirt, the woman in her slip,

On a summer night with the moon at its fullest, a husband and wife sit together on a woven rush mat under a gourd trellis, enjoying the cool of the evening. Next to the man is a sake cup; perhaps he has just enjoyed a cupful as he reclines to view the moon. Look closely and it becomes clear that the woman is cradling a baby in her arms. The waka poem that forms the title of this print refers to the man’s tetera, which is a type of knee-length undergarment, while the woman’s futano is the slip around her waist. Warriors feature heavily in the ‘Tsuki Hyakushi’ series, making this sort of scene-a nameless farming family in peace and harmony-very unusual. There is palpable affection in Yoshitoshi’s gaze.
