USS New York was the leading ship in the NY Class of battleships. She was built in Brooklyn, NY, in 1911-14 and served in the World War I and WW II and earned three WW II Battle Stars. Cover franked with a 4 cent flag stamp # 1132 (FDOI). 

The vessel served in the Atlantic and South Pacific earning 3 Battle Stars as convoy and invasion escort ship and coastal bombardment ship at North Africa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa until 1946. After Magic Carpet duty, the proud vessel was decommissioned on 29 Aug 1946 and expended as a target in Operation Crossroads, the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests in July 1946 .
