LONGINES Calatrava Ref. 5798 Cal. 12.68z c. 1947 with Extract

A large and uncommon Calatrava-style Longines ref. 5798, employing a distinct Bauhaus aesthetic. Housed in a substantial 35mm stainless steel casing, this piece is accompanied by an official Longines extract, confirming its invoicing to Ostersetzer in 1947, the Italian envoy of Longines during that era.

The original silver has patinated to an eggshell cream palette, studded uniformly with speckles. This Bauhaus aesthetic emphasis on typography is evident in the sparing use of smaller set Arabic numerals and particularly in the diminutive Longines logo on the dial, creating a generous amount of white space. The watch also wears larger due to the extended, scalloped claw lugs that evoke a distinctly baroque countenance.
