Artists and Engravers: Made by 'A.J. Rosel van Rosenhof' after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works.

Subject: Antique print, titled: ''Locusta Germanica. Tab. XI.'' - This print shows ''Vervolg van denzelven'' (Continuation of plate 10: The large grasshopper that lives in trees and forests). Several specimens of tree-dwelling grasshoppers, in various stages of development, also including the eggs.

Condition: Very good, given age. Some faint soiling and/or staining in the margin edges. Image faintly browned, and with some faint offsetting from the opposite text page. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 21.5 x 27.5 cm. The image size is ca. 13.5 x 17.5 cm.
Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 8.5 x 10.8 inch. The image size is ca. 5.3 x 6.9 inch.

Medium: Handcoloured engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: C & I Honig
