Othon Suarez was a renowned Cuban printmaker. He completed
secondary education and obtained a degree in Surveying, specializing in land
surveying, architectural drafting, and mechanics, with a focus on Diesel
engines. He did not complete his formal studies in drawing and modeling at the
former school attached to San Alejandro. He was self-taught, and his work was
structured through daily practice and enriched by his insatiable desire for
knowledge, which drove him towards artistic creation.
He dedicated his time to teaching at technical schools and
institutes. Later, he became fascinated by the vast field of biology and developed
as a scientific illustrator at the Institute of Zoology of the Cuban Academy of
Sciences, where he carried out numerous activities.
In the 1970s, he started producing prints and became a
member of the Experimental Graphics Workshop. Here, he expanded his
responsibilities to include design tasks, creating postcards, and illustrating
some titles for the Gente Nueva publishing house. Notable among them are
"Mamíferos de Cuba" (1980), "Catey y sus amigos" (1984),
"Las aves de Cuba: especies endémicas," Volume I, and "Las aves
de Cuba: subespecies endémicas," Volume II (1987), and
"Polymita" (1987) for the Scientific Technical Publishing House. He
also ventured into philately, where he presented various series on "Flora
and Fauna" and "Endemic Birds of Cuba."

Othon Suarez fue un reconocido grabador cubano, cursó la
educación secundaria y obtuvo su título de Agrimensor, experto en trazar
tierras, dibujante de arquitectura y mecánico, especializándose en motores
Diesel. No finalizó sus estudios formales de dibujo y modelado en la antigua
escuela adjunta a San Alejandro. Es autodidacta, su labor se estructura a
través de su trabajo diario y se enriquece gracias a su insaciable deseo de
adquirir conocimiento, lo cual lo impulsa hacia la creación artística.
Dedicó su tiempo a la enseñanza en escuelas técnicas e
institutos, posteriormente se sintió fascinado por el vasto campo de la
biología y se desarrolló como dibujante científico en el Instituto de Zoología
de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba, donde llevó a cabo numerosas actividades.
En la década de los 70, inició su producción de grabados y se convirtió en miembro del Taller Experimental de Gráfica. Aquí amplió sus responsabilidades con tareas de diseño, creación de postales y como ilustrador de algunos títulos de la editorial Gente Nueva. Entre ellos destacan: "Mamíferos de Cuba" (1980), "Catey y sus amigos" (1984), "Las aves de Cuba: especies endémicas", Tomo I, y "Las aves de Cuba: subespecies endémicas", Tomo II (1987), y "Polymita" (1987) de la Editorial Científico Técnica. También incursionó en la filatelia, donde presentó diversas series sobre "Flora y Fauna" y "Aves endémicas de Cuba”.
