SS Chief Joseph: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in his honor.

The vessel was delivered on April 4, 1943 by the Oregon Shipbuilding Corp. in

Portland, OR. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces

during WW II. The vessel also carried commercial cargo from 1946 until 1962 when

her hull was recycled for scrap metal.

The ship cover also honors Native-American Nez Perce Chief Joseph. He fought against the

American soldiers and led his nearly 3,000 of his people toward Canada in 1877, rather than

enter a reservation. He surrendered in October 1877 and was a celebrity until he died in 1904

in eastern Washington State. The postmark is from the Eastern Oregon town named in his honor.

Seller has covers for over 60 different Liberty Ships named for famous Americans.
